Best trip ever! In April ,we took our 4 yr old nephew .The village was interesting,worth seeing for it's historical value despite the Mosquitos .He LOVED the lengthy ATV ride over the dunes out to the widest,most beautiful beach we have ever seen! perhaps it was the time of year, but we found very few shells, which was disappointing because it was one of the main reasons for our trip. the beach was certainly beautiful but it was hot and there were many green flies- bring strong bug repellant and beach umbrellas! Captain Austin's boat tour to Portsmouth was one of the highlights of my recent trip to the Outer Banks with friends. Eleven of us went out to the island with six of us hiking to the beach. Be warned: The mosquitoes were absolutely ferocious there in the summer, as advertised. I would suggest long sleeves and long pants or the strongest repellent you can get.
