If you hate bugs and freak out at a mosquito bite, this is not for you. If you are sensitive to heat, this is not for you. If you always need to be in air conditioning & feel comfortable, this is not for you. But if you love riding ATVs on a lonely beach, seeing sea turtle nests, collecting rare... More

We expected just a ferry ride to and from Portsmouth Island, but got so very much more. The captain took us to the pelicans' island where we saw tons of baby pelicans (from the boat, of course). He also took us past Teach's Hole, the lighthouse, the house where he was born, and he shared the stories that went along... More

The boat tour is outstanding, and if you like history and a little bit of exploring, you'll totally dig this one. Our Capt. was Donald Austin, and I really liked this guy. He has tons of stories and knowledge, and the more questions you ask, the more you'll learn! He stuck around with us the entire tour, which we really... More

The Boat Tour itself is outstanding. $20 per person (no discount for kids). Tipping is traditional. Capt. Austin is a life-long islander and has personal connection with the last inhabitants of Portsmouth. The ride over on the skiff is a lot of fun, and Capt. Austin is very generous with sharing stories of Ocracoke and Outer Banks. He brought us... More

Taking a tour with the Austins was a great choice for our family. We were dropped off on the beach of Portsmouth Island for four hours and had a great time exploring the beaches with the kids. You can find no friendlier people on the Island and they are part of the history here so their knowledge is unsurpassed.

My husband and I went with our daughter when she was about 9 years old. We wanted to explore a little beyond the usual Outer Banks attractions. You catch the ferry to Ocracoke (go early to avoid lines) and that was fun in itself with the wind in our face and the broad expanse of sea and nearby island and... More

Austin's boat tours to Portsmouth Island should definitely be on your list if you are planning a visit to Ocracoke. The trip leaves from the Community Square in the middle of the village. Be sure to leave time to go park your car in the visitor's parking at the end of the village, by the ferry. (We didn't, but they... More

We went out to Portsmouth Island with Austin's Ferry Service. Donald Austin took us out and did a great job telling stories about the history. We saw a dolphin mom teaching her babies to fish on the way out and saw an island of pelicans nesting on the way back. Portsmouth is an interesting abandoned village and has great beaches... More

Best trip ever! In April ,we took our 4 yr old nephew .The village was interesting, worth seeing for it's historical value despite the Mosquitos .He LOVED the lengthy ATV ride over the dunes out to the widest, most beautiful beach we have ever seen! We found several scotch bonnets, several huge black whelks, big weathered white whelks,a blow fish, giant horse shoe crab, olives. They gave... More
