Had just a little time so took short drive to see light house. It was not open & not a lot to see right at the light house. Across the street there was a walkway to the beach with signage giving a fair amount of interesting information. Beautiful view of ocean & Bald Head Island.

I plan to climb the Oak Island Lighthouse again. I enjoyed learning the history of it, and the climb to the top. The view from up there is gorgeous.

An easy drive takes you to Oak Island and the lighthouse built in 1958. The staff was extremely friendly and inviting. Steep ship stairs let you climb to the top if you want to partake in this (advance reservations). There is a small boardwalk across the street for photos and seeing the beach. Parking is very tight and the lot... More

My wife and I climbed the Oak Island Lighthouse last October and it was fun. Though it can be a horrifying climb to the top its very rewarding when you get outside at the top. This is a guided tour. There are many steps which can be damp and feel slippery at times. Hold on tight to the rails while... More

We have relatives visiting from Canada and they wanted to see a lighthouse. This is the closest one to us, so we drove to Southport for the afternoon. This was their first time seeing the ocean-the lighthouse and ocean all in one stop was perfect! The kids were disappointed they couldn't go inside the lighthouse but overall they were amazed... A very new Lighthouse in comparison to others but good looking all the same. If you want to visit this and climb to the top you will have to give 2 weeks advance notice. Public "no reservation required" free tours to the second level (NOT to the top) are offered every Wednesday and Saturday (10 AM - 2 PM) Parking... More

We can't come to Oak Island without making a stop to see the lighthouse. Granted we have never done the tour, but the view is spectacular from the road and across at the beach. Definitely take a moment to head across where you can also see Bald Head.

We knew about advance reservations to go all the way to the top, so didn't even bother about that but we were able to go to the 2nd level and get some background history on the lighthouse and see the inside. There are nice picture opportunities in the front of the light house and across the street there is a... More

It states that reservations for a tour must be made 2 weeks in advance. However, its free to visit the site though and the adjacent beach accesses provide excellent locations to take pictures from. Parking in the off season is easy and is about 20 feet away. The beach on the other side is definitely worth a stroll.

I climbed the lighthouse on Wednesday October 19th. I discovered the lighthouse a few days before my trip and emailed the staff at www.oakislandlighthouse.org to try to schedule a tour. Even though the site says you need to give 2 weeks notice to schedule a climb, the staff worked with my group, and added us to a tour already scheduled... More
