If you travel to Oak Island, you have to take a day and climb the lighthouse. Absolutely beautiful views and a great workout! The staff is all volunteer but you would never be able to tell based on their great service and knowledge. A great day trip!

I am never disappointed by my visits to Oak Island lighthouse. The volunteers there are so fun and full of information. I would love to go back again for a full tour! As part of the US Lighthouse Society, I am finding this is my favorite lighthouse so far. the beach is also very clean and beautiful.

My wife and have toured all of the NC lighthouses and this one was unique. Its made of cement versus stone or brick. The walkway across the street was nice with great views of the lighthouse and beaches.

Interesting lighthouse, very different than others along the NC coast. Newer, built 1958. All cement. Easy to see from the OKI beaches. Definitely be sure to take the boardwalk-observation deck walk, across the street, to the beach. Very informative nature signage, including loggerhead turtle nests.

Really enjoyed the nature walk across the street and actually saw a brown cotton rat by the lighthouse! Beach is in its natural state- very hard to find. Great shelling!

Tour is free but they take donations. We went out on a Wednesday AM. They only do tours of just the first flight of ladders but it was good and informative. Going to the top is on other days and requires reservations.

This was a very different lighthouse experience for me. As North Carolina's youngest lighthouse, it does have some features that are unlike other lights: It's painted in a non-traditional method, and it doesn't have the conical shape most lighthouses feature. Inside, the traditional spiral staircases are noticeably absent. Instead, you'll find ship's ladders, which may be more difficult for some... More

I recently climbed the Oak Island lighthouse with four other people. We have climbed several lighthouses in the past, including the Hatteras lighthouse. The staff was very knowledgable and provided quite a bit of interesting information about the lighthouse. The climb was a bit tricky. Instead of the traditional spiral stairs, the Oak Island light has sailor ladders, the type... More
