No fort here at Fort Defiance, but a lovely old, well preserved home that belonged to General William Lenoir. It dates back to before the American Revolution. It still has some of the original furniture displayed in the rooms of the house. There is also a smokehouse still standing. The volunteers are extremely knowledgable about the history of the house... Fort Defiance is not actually an army fort--it is a large colonial home owned by a rich man who was a local leader during the American Revolution and the town of Lenoir, NC is named for him. You have to drive out of the way to get to it but it is well worth going to see. The house is... More

Dating back before the Revolutionary War, the house still contains artifacts that belong to the family from that timeframe. Beautiful remote location, a great destination and a good reason to bring the family out into the country and bring a picnic.

We took our students here to learn all about the history of the area. They enjoyed making rope, fire and candles and toured the house as well as learned about animals, chores and hunting. They got to have a picnic lunch outside. It was a great, educational, day!

Nice but nothing special , tells you about the history and start of Caldwell county. It's in the country on the back roads in the Happy Valley area.

An excellent example of eighteenth century architecture. Beautiful valley setting just below the Blue Ridge. It is amazing to find this level of detail and millwork in such a rural and remote setting. Many original and period furnishings are on display. Excellent, knowledgable Docent provided a great tour. Truly a remarkable home considering this was the edge of the frontier... More

I had no idea this plantation even existed. I travel highway 321 north fairly often and have seen the historic sign for Fort Defiance. I was curious one Sunday and made the turn to check it out. 6 miles off the highway you come to a road that takes you to a house that in it's day was really palatial.... More
