It was a bit of a haul up a gravel road (in our sedan), but well worth it. The views are breathtaking.

After a long, dusty ride to reach the base of Max Patch we were ready to climb to be rewarded with the view. It was a perfect day with few clouds. We hiked the path to the top, following a family that had brought a picnic including a foil pan full of some type of pulled pork or chicken. The... More

Bad roads to get there, but worth it once you arrive. I wouldn't take cars with out much ground clearance, but you wouldn't need 4WD in good weather. Views are great, and hike is pretty mild. We went on a fairly cloudy day, so I'm sure the views would have been much better if there was full sun.

Okay...I am not in the most AMAZING shape but I highly recommend walking straight up the hill. It is a baby hill and the best use of your time so you can enjoy the rest of the STUNNING 360 degree view. What I actually loved most was the hikers on the appalachian trail that kept walking by...soooooo interesting to interact... More

The signs say you are not allowed to not walk straight up the hill to the top and to only take the trails and there is a reason... It is steeper than it looks and will exhaust you. Once you are there its breathtakingly beautiful.

We've lived in Haywood County 30 years and this is at least an annual outing. Be sure to go on a clear day to take in the 360 degree views! The Appalachian Trail follows the top of the bald and, if you're lucky to meet them, you can talk with through hikers in the spring. They are usually very willing... More

We were pretty tired from hiking earlier but well worth the hike. Took us about 15 minutes to hike up - pretty muddy in April. The most incredible 360 degree view we've ever seen! Bring boots, water and camera.

It was about 20 miles from Hot Springs and the road was winding but we were very glad we made the journey recommended from a traveler we met when staying in Hot Springs! We were here at the end of March so there ended up being some snow we had to get through both driving and then hiking to get... More

All seasons view, and a nice resting spot on the trail for thru-hikers. Access to the plateu can be from two paths,a longer round about that gently curves upward or a direct steep incline that is a very good workout.

Kind of a long ride up from Hot Springs but well worth it. 360 views of the mountains and the Appalachian Trail runs right across the bald. Took my wife and two college kids here in December. Cool and somewhat breezy but very enjoyable to all. The road up runs along a scenic creek and a couple scenic pullovers are... More
