Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built...

Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built in 1952. We are located exactly 9 miles from beautiful downtown Highlands, and 9 miles from downtown Franklin. We are 1/3 of a mile from the breathtaking Cullasaja Falls (means "sweetwater" in Cherokee). Also, 5 miles from Dry Falls (seen in The Last of the Mohicans). Our guests can browse our huge rock shop and gift store, or eat hot boiled peanuts on our front porch overlooking the beautiful Cullasaja River. Our gem mine is all weather fun for the whole family. Macon County is considered the "Gem Capital of the World" for a reason! Come and buy a bucket to sift! Small Buckets are $10 each, and one per person. Ultimate Buckets are $30 each or 2 for $50. These buckets are big and can be shared! We also have a $100 Bucket Club. This bucket is great for families. With this, you receive a $45 free cut of a gemstone that you find! Chuck is a master lapidary and we can help you choose what would be the best thing in your find to cut! We are handicapped accessible and very kid/pet friendly.

Someone recommend this place and I'm glad I checked it out. The small store sells all kinds of gems made into jewelery and other trinkets. Once we walked into the shop, a lady greeted us and asked if we needed help. A couple of kids behind the counter and 2 dogs. They also sell jams, honey and salsa along with... More

We visited with our granddaughter and she had a blast sifting through the sand looking for gem stones. The staff will help you distinguish between rocks and gem stones. A fun way to spend an hour or 2.

We bought the $100 bucket since they would polish & cut one of our gems found in our search. We found a great deal of semi precious rough gems. A worker pointed out all of them & named them for us. We scored on a few silver topaz gems & converted them into studs & a pendant set in sterling... More

The gem mining experience in Franklin ranges from digging through buckets of "salted" loose dirt to find gem stones brought in from all regions of the world, to actually going and digging up "unsalted" native NC clay dirt yourself and looking for native gems such as garnet, ruby, and sapphire. Jackson Hole Gem Mine offers buckets with both native and... More

Great staff super friendly and informative make sure to do the "mining" my 5 year old was absolutely blown away by what she found. I would say it's best for kids under 8 or so.

My wife and I took our 6 year old daughter back to Jackson Hole Gem mine for the second year in a row. Each time we visit Highlands/Franklin she begs us to take her. It is a nice place that is well run. You can get something cut if you would like but there is no hard sell at all.... More

My daughter and I went up to Highlands for the weekend and ended up going Gem Mining here. The people were wonderful & we found ALOT of beautiful rocks! My daughter even had a bracelet made with some of the stones she found. We would definitely go back!

My granddaughter wants to return to Highlands, not to see her Grn but to go gem.mining. So, if you don't mind getting your hands a bit muddy sifting for gems,, this is the place. Besides, it is a hands on geology lesson. This area is rich in minerals. Don't expect to find a clear cut gem, but your child will... More

This was our second trip here cause we enjoyed it so much the first time. Get your bucket of sand and find your gems in a clean, sheltered area with helpful staff to help you identify your finds. Then have them cut into beautiful gemstones and set in setting of your choice if you choose to do so. Friendly staff... More
