Description: Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built...
Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built in 1952. We are located exactly 9 miles from beautiful downtown Highlands, and 9 miles from downtown Franklin. We are 1/3 of a mile from the breathtaking Cullasaja Falls (means "sweetwater" in Cherokee). Also, 5 miles from Dry Falls (seen in The Last of the Mohicans). Our guests can browse our huge rock shop and gift store, or eat hot boiled peanuts on our front porch overlooking the beautiful Cullasaja River. Our gem mine is all weather fun for the whole family. Macon County is considered the "Gem Capital of the World" for a reason! Come and buy a bucket to sift! Small Buckets are $10 each, and one per person. Ultimate Buckets are $30 each or 2 for $50. These buckets are big and can be shared! We also have a $100 Bucket Club. This bucket is great for families. With this, you receive a $45 free cut of a gemstone that you find! Chuck is a master lapidary and we can help you choose what would be the best thing in your find to cut! We are handicapped accessible and very kid/pet friendly.

This was our second trip here cause we enjoyed it so much the first time. Get your bucket of sand and find your gems in a clean, sheltered area with helpful staff to help you identify your finds. Then have them cut into beautiful gemstones and set in setting of your choice if you choose to do so. Friendly staff... More

Had decided to do some gem mining. We stayed in Highlands and this attraction is only an 8 mile drive but going down the mountain feels a lot longer. However that being said it was a fun activity for the whole family. They have different levels of mining that are available. We had two teens 15 and 17 that even... More

A little off the beaten track but that means it's less commercial. Grandson had a great time and even learned something.

Had a fun time. Mine is a "salted mine" which means they enrich the dirt you dig thru, which is the best way for little kids. Everyone was helpful and knowledgeable. Restroom was a Porta potty, but a clean one. They do try and up sale the lapidary and jewelry mounting services really hard, but not annoyingly so. The cherry... More

Everyone becomes a kid again at a "gem mine". The running water simulates a stream, and sifting through buckets of dirt from local mountainsides spikes an interest in the history of "panning for gold", as the Pioneers left the East and headed West to find their fortunes. Locally, the North Carolina Highlands produces Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst, Emerald and Quartz... More

We stopped here in October 2014 with our two little boys--ages 5 and 9. We bought a large bucket of gravel (about $30). It took our boys about 30 minutes to sift through all the gravel and they had a great time! There was a young man helping out back and he was great. He really took time to show... More

My friend and I bought some nice stones and fossils. The clerk at the counter, made a switch on his and when he came home he found that what he paid for was a much lesser quality than what he had picked out! Be warned, be warned!

I purchased some very nice fossils for presents.I knew they were over priced but I knew who would like them,so I bought them.A switch was made during bagging.I was sent on my way with trash.Should I go back and ask these low life creeps to lie to me?

We took my 5 year old to the mine and she had a blast. We found a ton of nice gems/rocks and even had one cut. The fellow Jamie who helps you sift was extremely helpful with identifying the stones. He made my little girl's day. She loved it so much we went back again the next day. Great family... More
