Spur-of-the-moment weekend getaway to go boating with a couple friends. The pond itself is well marked for navigation and the views are spectacular. The insects were not bad at all considering the time of year and environment. We had originally only planned to go boating, but after spending the day out on the pond, we decided to go ahead and... With a friend, I hiked the Lassiter Trail and camped at the backpacking section, also hiked the Coleman Trail. The trails are well maintained and very scenic as they pass the Millpond and wind through the trees. There is also a family campground and camping in an area accessed by canoe. The Visitor Center has a knowlegable, friendly staff, restrooms,... More

Amazingly beautiful water experience. You can even camp on an island in the middle of a large lagoon. There are boat rentals or bring your own paddle driven water conveyance. Spanish Moss hangs down from the cypress trees in a way that takes you much further South than you actually are. It is reputed to be one of the top... More

You can rent a canoe and go gliding through a cypress forest submerged in shallow tea-colored water. Each tree is a different shape and you may even see a critter or two hanging out on a limb. More

I try to get out to the millpond at least once a year. Sometimes to go hiking, sometimes to go canoeing and sometimes to do both. There are campsites if you want to spend the night. Some of the campsites are available via hiking/canoeing and some you can drive to. Trails vary in length and none are too difficult in... More

Merchants Millpond State Park is a surprising find for a state park in Eastern NC. Its concept is built around a natural inland swamp or "pocosin" that was once used as a millpond by early settlers to the Albemarle Region. Great stands of cypress trees with hanging moss are the signature image for Merchants Millpond and these trees help create... More

My wife and I chose to go to Merchants Millpond on a whim. It couldn't have been a better, improptu trip. The water is beautiful and dotted with cypress trees. The family campground was great, and the canoe-in option is going to be our choice next time. We only stayed one night, but I could easily see us staying a... More

I wish I would have scheduled more than an hour for this stop. The staff was friendly and the scenery was magnificent. Bird watchers would like this too. We rented a canoe for an hour ($5...what a deal) and paddled through the swamp. It was so pretty and peaceful. Yes, I think swamps are pretty, especially this one. I took... More

This is part of the Great Dismal Swamp "system". But, let me tell you, it is glorious! The variety of wildlife is stunning. The swamp is so beautiful- you really must see it for yourself. This state park is located on NC Hwy 158 about 30 miles from Elizabeth City and Edenton and also 30 miles from Suffolk VA. It... More
