An older man that works there walks back and looking for stones that inexperienced people dump out and keeps them for him self. I got into a conversation with him and he bragged about all the rubies he has collected that way. My wife found what they called a specimen rock [large chunk of granite with rubies sticking out of... We went to the Sheffield Mine which was located in beautiful rolling hills about 35 minutes from Franklin. We were not dressed appropriately for mining and was so disappointed. You really do have to wear shoes and clothes that will get very muddy and dirty. However, people in parking lot were so excited about all the gems they had found... More

Very good place to go. Warning, mining gets into your blood! Our son found a large Ruby and is going to have it made into a necklace for his wife. It is much fun. Wear old clothes and plan on staying awhile.

We arrived at the mind a little after 3 and even though they don't usually let people start that late when we explained that we were lwaving the next morning they let us in. I really enjoyed it. Even though we didn't find anything big it was funn to try (kind of like buying lotto tickets but more work!) The... More

This is a mine that the rock hounds prefer. You might get something really nice or nothing at all since no one knows what is in each bucket.. The staff was helpful. Prepare to do a lot of work and to get muddy. We had 2 adults and 4 children. The kids enjoyed the rainbow buckets but I liked the... More

We have been going to Sheffield Mine since 2009 for our vacation. The flume operators and managers are so helpful that it makes it a fun experience for us. We enjoy the banter, the help in spotting the rubies (both the babies and the super honker that I threw out). The manager Warren taught my husband how to spot rubies... More

I have gem mined before but this was my husband's first time. We chose this mine because it had been reviewed by the Travel Channel several years ago. We had so much fun looking for rubies...had a total of 8 buckets and red mud on us. We did find some rubies and 2 were large enough for earrings. Richard was... More

We were very thrilled with the experience at the mine. The staff was very helpful. The whole family found rubies including our 2 year old. Looking foward to going back soon.

Been twice. It's messy but fun. Bring an extra pair of shoes and bring snacks and drinks. Lots of fun for kids and adults. It can be too hot in the summer, so watch out.

Staff at this mine were very helpful and friendly, but we didn't find much in the 6 buckets we went through. Largest stone was 11 carats. I understand it wouldn't be called gem hunting if you always scored but we had better luck elsewhere.
