This was the first time going back gem mining in 20+ years and we always went to Mason Mine. It still has very friendly and helpful people. All of us liked having to dig our own dirt. We didn't find a whole lot but while we were there, several people found some very nice stones. We'll be back!

A great place to dig for your gems all day long as it was done and still is back in the good old days. You will find a gem or two and possibly a real 'bell ringer'.

This was the reason we went to the Franklin ,NC area. The people here were extremely helpful and provide a lot of information about what we were able to get out of our two BUCKETS of dirt & gravel. A good diversion for the whole family.

I had high expectations of this mine based on all the great Trip Advisor reviews, but my kids and I left Mason's mine disappointed. Not because we only found a couple minuscule sapphires after 4 hours of digging and sifting through the dirt, but because it seemed that the people helping us preferred to be somewhere else (smoking cigarettes, chatting... The experience at the Mason mine is either frustrating or fun; it's up to you. If you go there thinking that you will find a really nice, large, gem-quality stone, you will most likely be frustrated. However, if you go for the fun of digging and sifting through the dirt you can have a really nice time. The site is... More

My wife and I and two young daughters mined for gems and came away with around 50 carats of sapphires. Wife found a bell ringer at 15 cts. We loved it, started around noon and closed the place down. Brandon and all were GREAT. Can't wait to go back.

We came to Franklin with the sole purpose of coming to this mine. This place was above and beyond anything we ever thought it would be. We were greeted by the lady in the office who was super nice. We told her we were first timers, and the told us to head outside and Charlie would guide us. He gave... More

There just isn't much to find here, and their prices are ridiculously high for what you get. We dug for 3 hours, and found 3 small stones. We specifically traveled to NC to mine gems, and this one was at the bottom of the list, for the 4 we visited. The staff is very, very nice, however.

My family including husband kids aged 18,15,13,10 vacationed in Cherokee, NC in July 2014. We decided to choose Mason's mine because it was dig yourself and you did not have to pay by the bucket. The drive over was a little long but beautiful!!!!! You payed a $30 admission price per person and could spend the whole day.. On arrival... More

We planned to visit 2 native gemstone mines during our trip to Franklin, NC. Mason's did not disappoint. The staff were all friendly and helpful. They took the time to show us how to find sapphires, and when we weren't successful they re-checked our stones. My son found a 5 carat purple sapphire, and we all found some smaller sapphires....
