We have been season ticket holders for the Carolina Theater's music series. While the building is much older than some of the historic theaters throughout the south that I have visited, the Carolina Theater is a diamond in the rough in downtown Durham. There is a parking deck across from the theater which makes access easy. The quality of shows

The Carolina Theater is a theatre (to the right) and a cinema (to the left). The theatre is nice, and it has great acoustics. Just do not sit towards the front and to the side. The speakers are in the front corners. There is a parking deck directly across the street. The area is safe. Buy your tickets by phone... More

This is a beautiful theater with a lot of history. I attended a concert and found the intimate setting to be warm and relaxing. Staff was extremely accommodating and everyone was professional and helpful.

We went to see Rufus Wainwright in concert. Had great seats, but the sound man was not paying attention, and the vocal mic was not operating properly. Very disappointing.

There are actually several theatres at the Carolina: the main stage where touring groups, comedians, etc. perform, and several smallish movie theatres. Their movies are a bargain and if you get a chance to attend the movie festival, I'd recommend that if you enjoy more avant garde kinds of film.

We went to see Bruce Hornsby here several years ago. We currently have tickets to see Boz Scaggs. It's not a huge venue, but it's comfortable, acoustics are good, and you don't feel like you're in a mosh pit. It's a CIVILIZED place, unlike one of the outdoor venues here.

Not sure what the capacity of the place is, but it's fairly small, which makes for an intimate setting for a concert. The seats themselves are old-school wooden seats - the kind we had in our grade school auditorium. Even so they "fit" given the decor and history of the place. I highly recommend it.

We were so anticipating a great concert with Joan Armatrading. Traveled to Durham, stayed overnight and ate great food at JuJu. But the concert was awful due to ear-splitting sound. Armatrading's voice was drowned out by her loud guitars. Known for her vocal range and unique voicings, Armatrading's voice was lost. We had to plug our ears. If this were... More

Had the pleasure of going to a concert here in February 2015. Definitely a pleasant departure from the typical concert venue. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the historic building lives up to expectations. From what I could see, there are no bad seats, and the acoustics are great.
