Ninth Street is an area, really just a few blocks long, known for lots of restaurants and small shops that cater not only to the college crowd (Duke University being so nearby) but that are also family friendly (think Elmo's Diner for great breakfasts and kid's menus) or date friendly (see Vin Rouge for delicious french offerings). Recent expansions include... More

In terms of cool streets/shops/restaurant areas I have visited I would say this is middle to bottom rung. It's really just a place to go just to get out of the house or to grab a quick bite. Nothing too special. If your out and about in Durham go for food and if you are into random shops you will... More

We always eat at Elmo's Diner but there are many new places to sample. Bruegger's Bagels is great for take out and has quick service. Several interesting shops to browse through and not all geared to the college students.

First I have to say that the cover picture provided is NOT 9th Street. It's actually Brightleaf Square on Main Street. My pictures actually show 9th street. You can come here to shop in some unique stores or dine at one of the cafes, coffee shops, sports bars, restaurants or diners. If you have never been here I would suggest... More

Ninth Street still has enough locally owned business to keep the uniqueness that has existed over the years. Good restaurants including Elmo's, Vin Rouge, Blu Fish, Blue Corn and Chubby's Tacos, Francesca's, Cosmic Cantina (close by). Good retail like Zola's, Vaguely Reminiscent, the Mail stop and Cozy. And for dancing, 9th St. Dance. Unfortunately, chain restaurants are slowly taking over.... More

9th Street has long been a funky street in Durham. It featured independent eateries and bars and a real, old-time, independent bookstore. The eastern side of the street features the older, independent businesses. Some of the buildings seem a bit rickety, but they have their own unique charm that is somehow lost in the newer buildings on the western side... More

The most eclectic three blocks you will ever find. From giant burrittos to the home made food at Elmo's Diner there is something for everyone. The bookstores, Vietnamese restaurant, the free trade stores all add to the college community atmosphere. Great place to visit anytime you are in Durham.

Was looking for shopping and came across this. It def has a nice vibe, but there isnt a lot to shop. Def can do all the shopping in less than an hour. Hopefully they will build it up after the apartments are done.

We were expecting a LOT to see and do... not so much. There are a few shopping options, a tuxedo shop, a salon and bohemian dress shop. There is a nice bookstore and a Duke themed gift shop along with a couple of bars and restaurants.

We always make a trip to 9th St for a meal and coffee/dessert afterwards. The changes happening there will make it THE spot when they get completed.
