I've been going to the OBX my whole life, but I just discovered a true hidden gem. Carova Beach is only accessible via 4 wheel drive vehicles which makes it the road less traveled. But the best part of Carova is seeing the wild horses roam the dunes and beach.

We took our four wheel drive vehicle here (a must for this part of the beach, cars will get stuck and the towing fee is over $400!) and it was worth the trip. The beaches are wide and flat, the water usually calmer, with less undertow. Go early and pick your spot since it is popular later in the day... More

Great experience. Love seeing the horses on the beach. They did have 4- wheelers patrolling the beach, making sure parking was in the middle. Yes, the horses do poop and pee on the beach, no different then a cow in a field. If you want lay out or let the kids play or fish on the water edge you should... More

Some people use this term to refer to the whole 4x4 area on the northern Outer Banks but it actually refers to the area above North Swan Beach. It is the northern part of the 4x4 beach.

We leave near a beach; we know how to drive 4x4 on a beach. That said; I could not believe the outrageous behavior! Trucks were driving amongst the people sunbathing at high speed. I saw a young girl jump out of the way of a truck that nearly clipped her tent! The worst was; we were leaving and a truck... More

Ok, this experience is super cool. You have to try it if you have 4WD. We have a little horse lover in the family and she was so excited to get to see the Spanish Mustangs. Make sure you not only have 4WD, but also you must deflate your tires before driving on the beach or you will get stuck!... More

This was amazing. The driving on the beach was amazing. We went with all our family and friends. We did get stuck, so I advise stay on the beach.

We recently visited this beach and the community of Carova that lies up in behind the dunes several miles up the beach. Had never experienced anything like this. Area was absolutely beautiful and something the locals should be very proud of. Saw several of the wild horses grazing in yards and also on the beach itself.

Isolated area good for being out on your own. Need 4 wheel vehicle to gain access, Roaming Wild mustang ( horses, not cars ) out here. Bring water bottles and food, enjoy the sandunes
