This is gorgeous! It's a must see. Don't attempt unless you have a four wheel drive and know how to use it. Go on a guided tour.

This area is mostly private. Access is definitely gained with a 4x4 vehicle, not a regular vehicle. The homes are spacious and beautiful with all the privacy due to the distance between these homes. The beach area is breath-taking and so open without crowds. We saw horses in yards and even in the parking areas beneath the homes that were... More

Great time for kids, parents and dogs! Make sure you have 4x4 or all wheel car. Bring all that you might need and make sure you take a tent or some type of cover as it is very windy.

Beautiful beach with many, many houses. Felt bad for the horses as their land or space is being so developed by humans. Isolated area.

You need a four wheel drive vehicle but if you do pack up a cooler, throw in some beach chairs and head north up 12 until the highway ends and beach begins. This stretch extends 11 miles up and after you go 1 1/2 m you can park and set up camp. A little quieter than the main beach, great... More

Our one experience with Twiddy ruined our vacation: they were unresponsive, too busy to answer the phone and really seemed to have sub-par properties to rent. Ours was filthy and environmentally wasteful. We had to make literally dozens of calls over the first three days to get the oven working, the bugs inside eradicated and the toilets working. Add in... You have to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, but even if you have one, I would recommend taking the tour. It is not an easy drive and the tour companies know where they are going when they get off the beach and can tell you about history and interesting facts. Well worth the money. Go early in the morning to... More

We rented a jeep and traveled north with our two young children. It was an amazing view driving along the water. We saw quite a few wild horses on the dunes one block inland and a few on the dunes by the water. It was an experience of a lifetime!!! But make sure you have a four wheel drive!

I've been going to the OBX my whole life, but I just discovered a true hidden gem. Carova Beach is only accessible via 4 wheel drive vehicles which makes it the road less traveled. But the best part of Carova is seeing the wild horses roam the dunes and beach.
