Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park is a developing international outdoor destination located 25 miles southeast of Asheville on Highway 64/74A in Chimney Rock, N.C. It is recognized as one of the Southeast’s most iconic sites and popular travel destinations. The Park’s 535-million-year-old monolith called Chimney Rock offers guests 75-mile panoramic views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. Hickory Nut Gorge, one of the state’s most significant centers of biodiversity, is home to 36 rare plant species and 14 rare animal species, and the second highest waterfall of its kind in the eastern United States. But it is not cheap. Its a private park and they charge per person..
That said, there are some amazing trails to hike, gorgeous waterfalls as well. Even if you don't feel like hiking, there is an elevator to the top of "The Chimney" then you just walk up a small set of stairs and the view is absolutely amazing....

Chimney Rock Park is way overpriced for what it offers. Yes, the hiking trails are nice, the Chimney Rock is picturesque, but it is not worth $12 per person fee. Do bring your walking shoes because you'll do a lot of steps until the top of Chimney Rock (bring a watter bottle with you). Do the extra effort to see the waterfall which is amazing!

Fantastic spot to view the Lake Lure area. With a little energy you can ascend to the lookout point and see great views of Lake Lure. The elevator was not operating when we were there so we had to use the stairs (492 of them)! Worth the climb. Also go see the waterfall from the movie the Last of the...

Didn't expect to see stairs built into a mountain, but this was a healthy 20 to 30 minute climb. You can take the elevator if you don't mind waiting. You have to pay to enter the park so be prepared for that. I wouldn't recommend it for small kids - some places are steep and difficult to climb. Take them...

Since 2010 the elevator has been under repair (being replaced by a new elevator). It was suppose to be completed by the end of 2011. Earlier in 2012, we were assured that it would be operating by the time of our visit in mid-April 2012. They are now saying that the elevator will be open in mid-May -- My advice...
