Best place in Banner Elk/Boone to gem mine. When your all done they take time to discuss with you what you found. All of their staff is super friendly and most are actually educated in geology or gemology. So not only is it fun it's educational. When it's all said and done you can even have them turn what you... We showed up around noon, and it was relatively busy. They acknowledge us right away. Very well displayed show room despite construction going on. Daniel and staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. A pleasant staff to talk with. They stayed until all customers were finished, even though there was snow and several area businesses had closed for the day. A... More

Me and my boys (6&8) went tubing in the morning and then were done with the cold by noon... Foggy mountain was the perfect afternoon activity. We got the 5 gallon bucket and it was just about right for their attention span. I will say I was a bit worried about rinsing rocks in water when it is 20 degrees... More

I have been going here for the past 7 years and it is a wonderful place to go. Me and my 19 year old daughter loves to do this every year. I don't snow ski so this is what i do for my Enjoyment. I have some stones set this past time and they are beautiful. We are from Augusta,... More

We visited the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine on a cold February day and purchased the Motherlode Bucket for a family of 8. It was a large size container that kept the family busy and competing for a good hour. The rocks and sand are sifted and washed to reveal any gems inside. Then the gemologist sort and identify the pieces... More

This is our favorite place for gem mining in Boone. I shouldn't actually say mining. You basically buy a bucket of rocks that the kids get to sift through. However, the amount and variety of gems found are much better than local competitors. We have tried others, but always come back to Foggy Mountain. One time we had them cut... More

First of all, I am SO GLAD we decided to check this place out on our vacation. It was the perfect rainy day activity. The reviews on TA were right when they said this place was awesome. Our family (Ages 32, 31, 12, & 9) had a wonderful time. Daniel was the one to help us out and spent 30-45... More

We had visited some of the other gem mines in the area in the past years but decided to try Foggy Mountain on this trip. We got the 5 gal bucket and started sifting away. The first thing that caught my eye was the size of the stones found seemed larger than we had seen in the past. Thinking this... More

I've honestly never been gem mining nor had the desire to go, but after driving past a few gem mines in Boone our group ( 3 adults, 3 teens, one child) decided to give it a try this a try. I am so happy we chose foggy mountain. Their staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. Travis helped us and even... More
