You got to choose a bucket (s, m, l) and sift through the dirt to find rocks that are actually gems. The staff was really helpful in identifying the gems. Afterwards you got to take them all home or have the Doc polish them up into beautiful gems. They also have a huge stock of gems to choose from if... More

We moved to Boone 2 years ago and have been known to frequent Doc's. Gem mining truly is a fun time, and surprisingly informative. We had Nate sift through our gems and he was able to walk us through what each stone was, if it was worth cutting, and which ones would be the prettiest for the girls. We always... More

We did a fossil/gem mining a couple of years ago with the kids and it was a ~10 minute experience with zero education. Doc's Gem Mines was totally the opposite. Kim and Rylie were totally helpful setting the kids up with their buckets. They explained that the buckets of raw material represented a mix of mine material from across the... More

Had always saw gem mining locations but never stopped at one. Saw reviews for Docs and decided to stop. We got the medium bucket, wish we had got the large. We had a great time. Staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. We got a lot of different stones. Interesting to identify what the are. We left a ruby to be... More

We visited this "gem mine" while staying on Sugar Mountain. They claim to be the only such place in the area that provides NC native gems and fossils. Not sure how true this is, but they seemed pretty adamant about it. It would take someone much better versed in gemology to confirm this outside of the employees. We had a... More

We went with our two and four year old girls and got a medium bucket to share. We found sapphires, rubies, amethyst, topaz, tourmaline, quartz and more. Doc and his staff were so knowledgable and friendly. They went through all of our stones to make sure we didn't miss anything valuable. And they were very eager to teach us about... More

Excellent place to learn more about mineralogy. All of the student works were highly knowledgeable about the minerals, and Doc was a gem himself. Very personable and interesting. Pricing was very reasonable, and the cut minerals are stunning. Fossil museum attached to the location is also a surprising find. The tour guide was funny, interesting, and knowledgeable. Definitely provided food... More

This was my first time gem mining. There are 3 different bucket sizes and prices to match. I got the small bucket, $12.00 and found a good amount of gems in the rough. The staff seemed very knowledgeable about the gems and how to sell you on cutting them for you if you chose to. They set the gems out... More

We stopped by at the urging of my 5 yr old. Bought the medium size bucket and went to town. Once we started we couldn't stop! We all found some great finds. I even found a sharks tooth! I highly recommend this place! We had 3 stones polished and cut. We would have done more but that's the expensive part.... More

We live in the Boone and Blowing Rock vicinity, and when we have family or friends visit us from out of town, we ALWAYS take them to Doc's for part of their High Country experience. It is just as good for kids as it is seniors. Everyone loves shiny rocks! The hands-on gem-mining is probably the foremost activity on everyone's... More
