Guess it's a big deal in the area, so my wife let me know we'd be going to see it. Actually I was pleasantly surprised. Having the brochure describing some of the "inhabitants" was a huge plus or I would have lost interest after 5 minutes & never walked the grounds. The background information provided made it a good stop.... More

The tours of the cemetery were closed for the season, so we picked up the self-guided brochure. The ones highlighted were interesting--some great stories and some old gravesites. I wondered if these were the only ones for which there was information--would have been nice to have a complete listing. The only thing that bothered me was the condition of the... More

I have visited cemeteries and burying grounds all over the world and would rank this right near the top. The history here is fascinating. First off both union and confederate soldiers are buried here, it is integrated with both white and African American grave sites, there is a British General from the war of 1812 here, the remains of settlers... The cemetery is that old...we purchased the $1.00 walking brochure from the historic society which gave a short description of each numbered grave. There is a girl whom was buried in a barrel of rum, a soldier standing and much more.

I have been to the old burial ground in Beaufort several times and will continue to visit there when I am in the area. When you visit there, be sure to get a map of the grave sites to follow along. The points of interest are numbered as you walk from grave to grave you can read the stories of... More

It was fun to stop here for a few minutes. I love graveyards and burying grounds....there are many 19th century, and some 18th century, graves here. Makes it very interesting to look around. Very pretty area, too.

If you lived in the area and knew (and cared) about these people's history it might be more interesting. The grounds are not well maintained. The donations must go to something else.

Day or night, this cemetery is spooky. We whisked through the graveyard, saw a lot of illegible tombstones. Apparently these dated back pre civil war. Later tombstones easily stands out with its more ornate masonry. Stately trees provide a perfect setting. Best visited perhaps during halloween?

The history here is incredible and the trees here are certainly part of the History. Some rather different ways of burying people back then.
