Innkeeper and friends recommended we take some time to visit this Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers burial ground. The grounds were larger than expected had many old, old, headstones and graves, from babies to seniors. There was even an area dedicated to the remains of the settlers that were killed during the Tuscarora Indian War September 1711. Also sadly, there... More

Don't let the word "cemetery" slip out of your mouth as this is referred to as only the Burying Ground by locals. With the live oak trees overhanging the grounds, it is an oddly beautiful place to visit. There are lots of plots that are interesting to see- including the soldier buried standing at salute & a little girl's plot... More

We were fortunate to be at the Burying Ground during the recent Historic Homes and Gardens weekend. We were extremely lucky to have a guided tour by an knowledgeable docent and learned so much about Beaufort history, much of it related to pre-Civil War and Civil War history. A beautiful historic cemetery to visit, especially if you come away filled... More

We had a guided tour and enjoyed the stories shared by our docent. One of our favourite activities in Beaufort.

Visited June 2014 mid-morning. Pamphlets were not available at entrance and I did not want to walk to the historical center to buy one. I would suggest printing the map and info from the website before visiting. I spent an hour or more wandering the beautiful grounds. It is extremely delicate and I was mindful of where I was walking.... More

My husband and I have visited the historic Beaufort Burying Ground several times on the self guided tour. Definitely get the pamphlet if you are going to do the self-guided tour because there is a lot of historical information about the those buried in the graveyard. As soon as you step into the cemetery it is like you have gone... More

I visited this site today. It is truly a treasure and so very interesting. How ever I could not believe the sad state of this cemetery. I realize stones shift and old trees produce many roots- so those issues I expected. What I did not expect were the weeds- leaves and poison ivy that was covering many of the graves.... More

My wife and I did the self guided tour after we got of the double decker bus. Get a self guide tour pamphlet at tourism center at bus stop, will help to explain the markers on the cemetery. Easy tour and very interesting.

As all cemetery's it was very quiet, live oaks and moss, and a different kind of caps than I have seen before. The tops of the graves had brink and mortar curved like they were shallow. and family plots. etc. a nice 30 minute stroll.

Does anything have more charm than an old Southern cemetery in the spring? Stop at the Visitor's Center and pick up their self-guided tour ($1), then stroll on over. The wisteria and azaleas cascade everywhere and the tombstone inscriptions are so touching. The coolness of the trees is a delight after a beach walk.
