Took the 15min. gondola ride in July – great views from top but noticeably chillier. Not much to do at top except watch 'mad' mountain bikers heading off down the ski trails! Oh yes, and take photos of breathtaking views. Plan for an hour at the least, but dependent on how long you want to stay on top. See photographer... more
Let me first say that we are not skiers...just sightseers. We visited purely for the view, and both the Cloudsplitter Gondola and the Memorial Highway were worth it! The 360-degree views were incredible. We did the tunnel/elevator to get up and then walked the stairway trail down. Take field glasses to increase visibility. We stopped off at Whiteface and took the gondola to the summit of Whiteface. Great views and the kids loved the ride in the gondola. I gave this mountain a 5star not for the mountain itself (although it is a very respectable slope), but for it's awesome layout for children. On a clear day, the views are awesome- my wife and I drove to the end and hiked up- not inclined (pun intended) to hike (it is a little strenuous)- don't worry- take the elevator up from inside the mountain (there were many senior citizens up top)- worth the trip and the price ($10 per car/driver and $5 for each... more

There is a family area that had four or five green trails serviced by a triple chair and an 'almost' full service ski lodge at the base. I didn't notice if there was a ski shop in the base lodge. This is a great mountain with spectacular views, a great nearby town(Lake Placid) and the bragging rights of being a mountain used for an Olympics. However, Whiteface seems geared towards more advanced skiiers and snowboarders.
