We happened on the Music Academy as we were walking around, but it turned out to be one of those life nice surprises kind of thing. Everyone put on great performance, on a beautiful and relaxing evening. Food was simple, but it was still a very enjoyable evening that they put together. If you like live music and checking out... After walking through the narrow streets of stone town under the hot sun for two hours or more looking for a major attraction which at least 167 people had directed us to we came across a fellow 'Muzungo' (European) who had the air of an expat. We immediately blocked his path and demanded he explain the way to us using... More

What an excellent recital we heard, as the sun set over the Indian Ocean and gentle sea breezes came in off the veranda. We had stopped in to see what this music academy looked like and were treated to a very eclectic performance. May you be so fortunate. (And if you are a piano tuner, consider stopping in and offering... More

With my tourist friends we stumbled into the Dhow Countries Music Academy to find a music recital happening on the top floor overlooking Zanzibar's harbor. The academy's building is square and old with an interior patio. First, on the second floor we bought CDs of academy musicians--wonderful authentic recordings of local music. Second, we filed up to the third floor... More

Magical evening at the Dhow Countries Music Academy. Ricardo Gracia from Spain performed live romantic flamenco recitals. The show started with beautiful traditional Taarab music performed by the students and teachers of the academy , followed by Ricardo's performance and ended with a fusion piece between the academy students and Ricardo's. Truly an evening to remember.

The dhow music concerts are the best and great value in Zanzibar. This is very good as it also encourages the students at the music academy. There are many concerts every week and check out, there is a big banner outside the school.

We were thrilled to hear about this music academy which strives to keep alive the traditions of African music. We heard a fascinating concert of Taraab music preceded by an authentic and well-prepared African meal. A real treat! Don't miss these Thursday evening concerts on the waterfront...

Stopped by on the Wednesday to look at an art exhibition and were given a flyer about the Dhow Countries Music Academy dinner and concert on the Thursday evening. We booked and were not disappointed. What a pleasant evening of good food and music. Thanks to the staff and students.
