I have also organized international groups to attend concerts and have workshops at DCMA and in every instance the Artistic Director, Mr. Matona, prepared a perfect programme that was filled with in-depth information on Zanzibar... Magical music, magical view, magical sunset. This is one of the best ways to learn about Zanzibari culture and meet some interesting young musicians. A cultural must!" At 10,000 tsh (basically $6) one of the best values in town.

Across the road from the port this is the place to meet local artists whose work is on display and for sale on the ground floor. A steep set of stone staircase leads to the top floor which houses an exhibition of musical instruments and there are classrooms for music classes.

Inside the "concert hall" there are white plastic chairs which create no pleasant atmosphere whatsoever. Some of the musicians, especially on Taarab- and other traditional instruments, are very good... More

I have been on a couple of very interesting and lovely concerts at DCMA. Brings in an extra dimension in to your visit, and opens up a insight in real Zanzibari culture

Their efforts to preserve traditional music and develop fusion forms with visiting artists has produced some great results. The building is lovely as well! Worth a visit if they have an event scheduled.
