We took the train from Utica to Old Forge. We brought a wheelchair for my daughter because he foot injury limited how far she could walk. The weather was rainy. It was good we had umbrellas for the brief wait on the uncovered platform. On the way to Old Forge, the train stopped because the rain and leaves on the... More

My husband (who had never been on a train before), my sister- and brother-in-law and I traveled on the "Fall Foliage Tour without a Layover", which left Utica at 11:30 a.m., rode to Thendara Station and returned at 5:30 p.m. (our trip ran an hour long, I think due to construction on the railway, but also the tracks were slippery... We took the fall foliage trip on the train. This one did not have a lay-over but we did get to go out while the engine turned around. It rained most of the time, but it was still a great trip, the colors were very intense and the volunteers were friendly and had many interesting facts and things to share.... More

My husband & I took the trip from Utica, NY to Buffalo Head restaurant in Forestport, NY. The train left Utica promptly at 1130 AM. The ride was relaxing & as expected the scenery beautiful outside the city. There's a variety of beers, sodas & snacks like donuts, cookies & chips on the train available for purchase. There were also... More

This is a must for families and just to take a nice scenic trip! I took my kids on the polor express and it was amazing! The "elf's" were great with the kids and getting everyone to participate in singing the christmas carols! The best part was afterwards they had milk and cookies for all the people as they departed... They travel from Utica to Old Forge. The volunteers that act as unofficial conductors with an official conductor make the ride a pleasurable experience not to be missed. Next year I heard they are expanding the ride to Lake Placid which will further enhance the experience. Older kids seemed to enjoy it more than the real young. They take you... More

Current ride ends in Thendara; the track to Big Moose was being rehabbed. The line goes all the way to Lake Placid but the state of NY is giving the railroad grief and is in cahoots with the rail-to-trail lobby to kill that section (or the whole railroad if they can get away with it. Don't let them). It's a... More

Nice way to kick back and relax. The train was a blast and the crew was great! They gave historical narrations along the way and pointed out interesting features before arrival. The train was clean and comfortable with your choice of several cars with reclining seats and windows that opened. We'll be back!

We had four people (family) who went on train ride from Utica to thendara..we enjoyed family time, lunch and drinks. Unfortunately we laughed during our trip and the cops were called. When we arrived to the station, entered our car, wr were pulled over shortly thereafter. We were informed the train station called to say we were drunk and disorderly... More

Maybe my expectations were too high going in on this trips, but I found the trip to be un-stimulating for most of the ride up to Thendara from Utica, except for a few nice spots of the moose river. There were no hills, mostly flat track winding through farms and people's backyards. Our train stopped often for some reason. The... More
