Found it very interesting, as there were many informational plaques associated with each piece. We spent several hours there, and only managed to make our way through about a third of what there was to see. Took a brief respite in the atrium, where we enjoyed the best banana muffins ever tasted. Also squeezed in a short tour of the... More

We recently visited to catch the latest shows, a fascinating exhibition about the WPA in Rochester and a pretty hard hitting contemporary video piece, which challenged but was fun, interesting. The Gallery is beautiful. GREAT permanent collection which surprised at every turn. Shockingly good American art collection, fresh, exciting contemporary stuff. Something for everyone. A surprising gem in Rochester! We... More

My wife and I spent a couple hours wandering through the museum while we were passing through Rochester. We primarily looked at the modern and contemporary art that was on display. The range seemed broad, but not particularly deep.

Words cannot explain the feelings of sheer joy and pride I have knowing that this city has access to an abundance of history through the arts held within the Memorial Art Gallery. History comes alive in the halls, on the walls, and through the lawns. The Creation Myth sculptures by Tom Otterness is by far my absolute favorite piece of... More

A Rochester Treasure, the “MAG” is located in some of the original buildings of the University of Rochester (which has since moved south of downtown, leaving only University Boulevard behind – well unless you count the MAG and the Eastman School of Music). The MAG is a wonderful example of a community-university partnership. Approaching the Gallery, you walk through an... More

As a former employee of NYC's Metropolitan Museum, I'm accustomed to big Sunday crowds detracting from the viewing experience. Big Sunday crowds are not a problem in Rochester. The museum has an interesting collection that one can see in a day. I especially enjoyed the pipe organ demonstration that takes place Sundays. There are also concerts on Thursday evenings. I... This is a top choice for Rochester tourists. It's a gem of a place: old-world charm with a fresh feel, elegant, beautiful facilities and grounds. Everything from ancient Egypt to contemporary art. Great American pre-WWII art, European treasures (Monet, Rembrandt, El Greco), crazy George Condo contemoprary clown painting. It's a lovely, quiet place, thoughtful, a wonderful retreat. If you're an... More

I was driving from Maine to Ohio with another artist friend. We stopped at 5 museums. They were all good ones, but this one was fantastic. We could take photos of everything, and the collection's and exhibitions were amazing. Congratulations to the community, you have such a rich resource at your fingertips. Everything from ancient Egypt, Roman and Greek sculpture,... More

Beautiful building, helpful staff and GREAT ART! Everyone has their favorites but what I like is to be stimulated into viewing new things i.e. not just one style of art but new dimensions in style and variety and I am always impressed with what I find. There is something here for everyone if only one pay attention.

Rochester is really well endowed when it comes to the arts. Case in point is the Memorial Art Gallery. If you haven't been there you have no idea of the quality of work in this beautiful building. And there's something for everyone. The permanent exhibits are really over whelming. If you have any kind of knowledge of artists or art... More
