This museum on the Vassar College campus in Poughkeepsie ,NY has choice works of art from every era of history. A visit doesn't take long, but you feel satisfied with the range of beauty and the impact of discovery.
I've known about this small museum on the Vassar campus for quite some time, but never stopped in until this past weekend. The 20th century art was the surprise. I did not expect to see several Picasso paintings, Matisse, Leger, Ernst, Matta, O'Keefe, Balthus (with a cat, of course), Delauney, Lichtenstein, and a wonderful Jackson Pollock, and 2 Calder mobiles.... I've been to Loeb Art center on different occasions.... Very Beauitful painting.... Spend a day admiring different Artist finest work..... There is ALWAYS someone on staff to help....
There is nothing lacking in this well-endowed museum... Calder, O'Keeffe, Dutch and French Renaissance, Thomas Cole, modern Malian, Inuit. And it's free. Very worth it.
I love this museum, especially the modern art area. The outdoor sculpture garden is also lovely. I have gone several times while my daughter has been a student at Vassar. Great for a long or short visit. Go often!
First of all, it's free. The Vassar College campus is beautiful for a stroll. The gallery has some great old Masters in its permanent collection, and always features something new.
My high school senior daughter and I enjoyed a pleasant hour here when visiting the Vassar campus--it's located right at the main gate, free, has convenient hours, and really fine art pieces in collection as well as very interesting shorter term exhibitions. Well worth a visit--even repeatedly.
I had a few hours of spare time in Poughkepsie and saw all the rave reviews for this museum. It is all true. Give yourself about 1-2 hours to see this small collection. The center is located on Vassar College Campus and boast some major pieces and classical Greek, Roman and Asian antiquities. Children are likely to be bored stiff - this is an art museum only, with no guided tours or activities.
