Just a touristy thing to do

On my visit with my wife we ran past this shop. We felt heart broken and helpless to see these animals in such bad conditions. One was tied with less than a foot of rope and made to stand all day so people passing by could see it. Others didn't have shade or water with the hot sun. Others looked... More

We had walked down the path to get to Old Port and stepped on donkey poo the entire way. We knew that we would either take the cable car back up or take a donkey. It was the same price, and my partner wanted to try the donkeys. It was just an assembly line, the hosts were all older Greek... More

I set off to walk with family members including my two young nephews up the 600 poorly maintained steps to the top. It soon became apparent that the owners of the donkeys were driving them up the hill as fast as they could and sending them back very quickly down the hill once the passengers had dismounted, several animals slipped... Although it sounded like it would be fun it was not. It was very chaotic, doesn't seem safe. I don't really care for donkeys but it seems as though they aren't treated very well. I would recommend people walk or take the gondola.

We chose to ride the Santorini donkeys because we had heard that it was a great experience plus the cable car line was soooo long! Thus we paid our 5 euros each to ride a donkey and regretted it! Both donkeys and tourists were treated gruffly. It was a chaotic and frightening experience. Near the top of the hillside there... More

I am saddened and sickened by the number of people who seem to think that it's "fun" to ride a donkey up and down the steps of Fira and Oia. Several times a day, these poor beasts have to carry often overweight, lazy tourists up the cliff faces in overwhelming heat with little access to shade, water, food and rest,... More

This is a picturesque ride that is better on the way up to Fira than on the way down. Take pictures, they will be funny.

I rode a donkey up the hill to in Santorini after getting off a cruise ship. It was 5 euros for the donkey or the cable car. I read some negative reviews but I wanted to try it anyway. I did not see any abuse to the donkeys and they did not seem to mind walking up the hill. They... More

If you have a heart don't do this. The condition these donkeys are in is extremely sad, so keep away don't encourage these people.

Nothing changed. Donkeys still are treated really bad and have to run and carry upstairs and downstairs in the heat and sun. Saw also lots of them with wounds because of bad saddles etc. Donkey owners beat them to make them run faster :( not recommendable!!
