On arriving at Santorini with Thomson Cruises we decided to take the donkey ride to the top as i am frightened of heights I was nervous of the cable car.I expected a serene trip on the donkey with someone leading the donkey to the top. How wrong could i have been!!! It was horrendous! Around 20 of us were herded... More

They rip you off (5 e per ride). We took the donkeys up the oia hill and we were not even taken all the way. The donkeys are badly mistreated plus the owners don't care about your wellbeing as they kept on yelling at my donkey to keep going and I was about to fall off many times. Apart from... More

Disgusted at the amount of tourists riding on these poor donkeys (and horses) they go up steep steep steps which are unsafe - the donkeys clearly struggle and sweat- we stopped to feed some donkeys and stroke them - I felt helpless - i also told many tourists from Oia to Fira to the Armeni village not to ride them... On our recent trip to Santorini, we were shocked to see the situation faced by the donkeys. Me and my parents all walked up, though there was also a cable car available. The amount of tourists (some of which would've weighed more than the donkeys themselves) willing to fork out €4 who sat upon the poor donkeys backs were relentless.... More

I am pleased to say I have not ridden on a donkey in Santorini and wouldn't dream of it. I have used my own two legs to walk up the paths. I have however witnessed the cruelty that these poor animals have to endure in such gruelling temperatures. They have no water, no shade and are constantly being hit with... More

The donkeys on Santorini are a well known attraction for tourists on the island. However, please, please, please DO NOT (!) go for a donkey ride. The donkeys are very poorly taken care of, have little water available to them in extreme high temperatures, work too many hours and get constantly beaten with wooden sticks ! These donkeys get abused... More

Absolutely disgusting that tourists today are still sustaining this cruel activity. The donkeys seem to have very little shade or water. If you are unable to walk up the steps, go by cable car. Would you carry somebody up on your back ?

I hope this message reaches not only potential tourists, but also the tourism council of Greece. I have been to Santorini myself. These donkeys have been going up and down the hill so long that it is almost like they are programmed and you better get out of their way. They don't even look up, just one foot in front... More
