After a long day of touring the island by boat, we thought it would be fun to take a donkey up to the top. Although it was a once in a lifetime, fun experience, the way that these donkeys were handled and treated was despicable.

There is an old Port that you can take stairs down to when you are visiting Fira. The view is amazing and the wind off of the sea around the caldera is beautiful. There are nice little shops around the port and boat tours of course. There is a small catch, which would be the 587 stairs (at four steps... More

Very upsetting to see how hard these animals are worked in the heat. The poster said the donkeys were given access to water during rests which was not true, nor was there any shade. I saw many tethered by a chain that was only a few inches long. And many limping with too much weight put on them.

DO NOT support this activity. Me and my partner lived on Santorini Island for two months. We arrived in the off season so were able to see the reality of how the donkeys are treated when the tourists aren't there. We were horrified one morning when we took a walk to Oia and stumbled upon 6 or 7 donkeys kept... More

We took the lift up to the top to avoid the donkeys and mules. We had been told my a crew member not to use the donkeys. The journey down by steps was very sad and made me cry to see these poor animals tied to the wall in full sun with no water. The sadness in the animals eyes... More

Many of my family had ridden the Donkey up. As we had taken a boat to Oia and then bused back to Fira there was no opportunity to go up only down. A BIG mistake. First the only living beings ruder and more ignorant than the donkeys are the men that manage them. Going up the donkey plods along keeping... More

We were on a Mediterranean cruise and one of our ports of call was at the Greek island of Santorini. Before arriving at Santorini, the ship's location advisor had announced that on arrival in Santorini, there were three ways to make the journey from the foot of the cliff up to the town of Thira, located at the top of... Sit on the donkey, a slap on its behind and away you go up a narrow path with donkeys in both directions as times bustling to get past each other. A loose stirrup on a donkey coming the opposite direct and crunch across my shin. I thought my leg was broken and after a visit to the doctor and local... More

The donkey tours appear to be an adventurous alternative to walking or standing in line for the cable car. Our companions unanimously agreed it is not a good idea. The poor things smell really bad. Even the concrete donkey statue had flies on it! The flies are annoying to the rider and donkey. One guest on our ship was bitten... More

We have just come back from Msc cruise which visited Santorini. The ship had to tender and we looked at the options to get to Fira at the top. The donkeys were 5 euro one way and really I should of known the reason why he never offered round trip at that point !! Getting on the donkey was rough... More
