It is difficult to find the words to describe the Murambi genocide memorial. It was a technical school, until 45,000 people were killed inside its walls in April 1994. Today, the bodies of over 800 of the victims can still be seen, preserved in lime, in the rooms where they were killed. It is *incredibly* graphic - I could hardly... more

Easily the best place to visit in Butare is the national museum. Not only is it architectually stunning from the outside, but the design also lends itself to the construction of well orgainised and attractive displays too. The displays cover most categories that you would expect from a national museum: art, archaeology, history, geography, geology and ecology, but especially impressive... more
