Have taken this trip , along with the boat ride on the lakes , about 4 times , just love it and would love to go during fall folliage.... There is a lot of trees after all but also beautiful scenery along the way. Plus we got to have lunch in Old Forge....

The train ride itself is nice, but there is not much to see from the train. We were expecting mountain views, but mainly all you see are trees along the tracks. We felt like we wasted time we could have spent driving around to sight-see. In addition when we got to Saranac Lake we had a hard time finding an... More

I couldn't find a page on Trip Advisor that covers this particular train journey, so I'm putting in here, even though we didn't go to Lake Placid. Hopefully people interested in train travel might find it, or Trip Advisor might start a section dealing specifically with this journey. After travelling from Seattle to New York on Amtrak, we decided to... More

Not much to see on train. Nothing at the destination on the other end-Saranac. Driving around the area is much better.

Better off taking a scenic drive. The train cars up front were near impossible to see out of. The open car was nice. 45 mins each way and only a 30 min stop at the town.

Ok. I'll start by saying the vintage diesel train and passenger cars were/are a great snapshot of days gone by. The open air car was excellent for our fall foliage ride. The conductor had great history and local stories to tell regarding this once busy railroad. Granted, a lot of the scenery is forest, but on a a fall tour,... More

Take this trip. Your legs will be strengthened, and you will forever have scenic views in your memory that will provide joy and comfort for the rest of your life. There is no experience quite like this one. A true, singular gem.

We took the trip from Utica to Thendara and return, which has an approximately 30 minute layover to reverse the locomotives in the fall and the foliage was amazing. We passed through small towns, fields and woods, and the most beautiful streams, ponds and lakes. There is limited space in the baggage car to stand (and sway a little) at... More

Inspite of reading the reviews before going there, I thought why not check it out. I was disappointed. The reviews were true to their saying. This ride is not worth at all the money. There were no "Fall season leaves", worth looking at. The entire ride has got trees on both sides blocking the proper view of the actual leaves... More

We have taken several "Scenic Train" rides. This one falls pretty low on the list. First the good the train was clean, the staff friendly and knowledgeable. The weather was incredible and the fall colors were beginning to pop we were looking forward to a great day. But there are very few vista views, with too many trees to close to... More
