There is nothing exciting about taking a train ride to see some trees and houses. So there is nothing "scenic" about this scenic railroad. Looking for scenic vistas of the gorgeous Adirondacks? Drive to the top of Whiteface Mountain. There has been talk about ripping out the tracks and replacing it with a bike path (no charge to use!). That... More

Absolutely beautiful scenery. Very inexpensive. Gives a nice chance to see both Saranac Lake area and Lake Placid area. Be sure to see the Robert Louis Stevenson Home while in Saranac Lake!

I always enjoy train rides so I really looked forward to this 1 hour journey.I like to enjoy and experience the ride and the views but that was not the case. The rial line had hired a banjo band to play on the trip, which they did very well, but was not needed by me. That, when added to the... More

This is a relatively expensive trip, but is something different for the kids to do. Please keep in mind that it is all run by volunteers and is meant to be a little bit of train experience for those who don't often get that experience. They have different themed days (like bandit day, where the train is presumably robbed-and Clown... More

I really wanted to like this ride. My family took a ride on a similar railroad in Vermont and loved it. This ride, however, was almost all just forest and a few old houses. I think we might have passed a correctional institute at one point. There were one or two pretty areas, but the majority of the trip was... More

This train ride is scenic and moves at a relatively slow pace. It stops at the destination for a few minutes and you can get off before it heads back. The younger children liked it while the older ones got a little wrestless.

An old fashioned ride to Saranac Lake and back. There is no narration along the ride and unfortunately the bandits did not show up. The kids on board seemed to have a good time anyway.

The ride took forever and the whole bandit charade was more annoying than anything. So not worth what we paid.

This themed entertainment train ride to Saranac Lake was a half an hour late both leaving and returning. There was no communication at all concerning the length of the ride, whether it was a themed ride, when to re-board at Saranac Lake, etc. It also wasn't the cleanest train. The actors were very good, but the story seemed very loose... More

Enjoyed the scenery and commentary given by the staff as we rode through the mountains. This is a family type outing, so be prepared. There were a lot of families. But the staff make it clear the children have to behave. It was very romantic ride.
