Incredible how big the fortress is and the system of water channels on the roof to recollect and store water during raining season... Think back in time... Amazing!

This is a fantastic place, full of history and magic, but it is very poorly maintained, notwithstanding the fact that a lot of money was supposed to have been invested after the town was declared as part of UNESCO's World Heritage.

Its a massive fort so you need a bit of time and best not to go in the middle of the day when its really hot. Guides will show you around if you arrange it beforehand. Go to the church insde fort too - the oldest european building in southern hemi apparently The beach at the fort is the best... More

Love the island... unique ambience... can wonder around aimlessly for days on end basking in the culture, history and atmosphere... We visited Mozambique Island while staying at nearby Coral Lodge (a 20 minute boat ride away). The Fort was great to see as was the entire island. The ancient streets are alive with history. I have been twice and had the place to myself both times. It is just nice walking around admiring the size of the fort walls and the nice sea views.
