There are many, many mosques in Mali and we saw about 10. The Mosque in Djenne is by far the largest and most well appointed. It is really quite an interesting structure. The Monday market in Djenne is set up around it. It is best to see prior to the market day since the market is large and quite crowded....

This traveler seldom responded to gee whiz sights during a 4 country, 3000k travel in W. Africa. The Grand Mosque was the exception. I did forego the hassle of getting inside, but make sure you see it from the rooftop of a nearby house. The cost of doing so is really a pittance. The Mosque is the real deal.

I went to Jumuah Prayer in the Great Mosque of Djenne. The characteristics of the strcuture inside as well as outside, made of sun dried mud brick, is amazing.

The mosque was truly amazing. I never realized how big it was until I was in front of it. The only disappointing thing was we really wanted to go inside, but at the time I was there, they were not allowing non-Muslims in. I would have loved to see the inside!
