It is a nice place to sit and make a nice picnic lunch. The trails to the top of the falls are a bit of work, but the view is worth it. You can swim, but the water is chilly, even in mid August.

Really enjoyed the hike along the gorge. Spectacular views and it came as a surprise that there was really a series of several falls. The trail is somewhat challenging as you have to climb quite a long way. The map s provided was helpful and gave some interesting information about the area. I thought it was a great idea that... Buttermilk Falls State Park is conveniently located just outside of Ithaca - scenic falls and gorge. The Gorge Trail is steep, but mostly paved steps with lots of places to take breaks and photos. We did the Gorge, Bear and Rim trails - I think it would be okay to just stick to the Gorge Trail and it's not totally... More

This may not be the best waterfalls in Ithaca if you have small children or or a bit older with bad knees. It is a beautiful area and there is a swimming hole on the bottom as well as cute playground. The walk up the falls is a bit much if you have children or bad knees as it is... More

It was okay, but not the best waterfall we saw on this trip. It's not big, and not much water running. It's not particularly high, but there is a nice path along the side that you can climb out to the lookout.

A perfect afternoon for lovers of the outdoors. The falls are wide and beautiful and viewed from a 3/4 mile stepped walkway along the edge. There are various places to stop and take in the view of the various sections of the falls and also spots to tiptoe around in the shallow pools at various levels....no swimming though except at... The hike was an uphill challenge of steps up one side of this scenic gorge and series of waterfalls. Just when you thought you had seen a great waterfall, another would be around a corner. Lots of pleasant surprises, such as the friendly teens jumping into a deep pool out of sight of park officials. Natural outdoor pool at the... More

We never expected to see so many waterfalls. We took the Gorge trail up and came down the Rim trail. So glad we stopped here, the falls are amazing.

Located within the town limits of Ithaca, Buttermilk Falls has plenty of parking and is only a 1 minute walk from the parking lot. The falls themselves look like they are running down a flight of stairs and are a nice sight to see. There are also some walking trails around the falls area.
