You are literally treasure hunting! Smashing rocks, digging through dirt and the sun practically finds the stones for you! If you think you're only going to have a medium amount of fun, be prepared for DOUBLE X L! Each tiny, shiny stone you find seems to come with it's own, tiny celebration. We totally dorked out and had an even... More

Went to the Herkimer Diamond mine when I was a kid with my folks back fifty years ago and was hooked for life. We went back two or three times every summer. When I returned in 2006, it had become a KOA attraction and campground, and also had a wonderful rock shop in the old barn. Looking for Herkimer diamonds... More

Little snow and frozen ground when we got there but it didn't stop us from finding the crystals. Ted, the owner refreshed the piles with loads of fresh material while we were there. The Ace is the best of the two mines there in Middleville.

Fun day or two getting down and dirty breaking rocks and digging in the dirt. The ground sparkles in the sunlight. You don't find "real" diamonds, you find Herkimer Diamonds. With some patience and a little work all 5 of us found some diamonds. Most in the 1/2 to 2 carat size range. After you pay to get your wristband,... More

I have been to other parts of the US to mine for different things and each one is its own challenge to say the least. After some quick google work I decided to go for a day and just bring an 8 pound sledge hammer. After 2 hours of randomly smashing rocks i stopped and figured there had to be... More

This was an enjoyable experience! I took my two young children, ages 2 & 6 and they both loved exploring the rock quarry using the mallets to try to find diamonds! We also went sluicing - that was exciting - almost like panning for gold! My boys could have spent two whole days here!

Herkimer is one of the few places I make a point to visit at least once a year. The thrill of finding the crystals is wonderful. The grounds are safe (as long as the rules are followed) and you are almost sure to find some diamonds as long as you have a little patience and perseverance. The restrooms are fair.... More

Herkimer Diamonds do disclose that those are not actually diamonds that you are finding; but it is amazing how many people don't listen or read that information and think that they are really finding diamonds! It is a hard high quality quartz. If you enjoy this type of geology and whacking around with hammer and chisels...you will be all good... More

Good for younger kids. The "Pros" go to the Ace of Diamonds. Slucing - for which they chard 11 per bag are bags of minerals or diamonds that you wash through water running up front. Not worth it unless you have really young kids.

My girlfriend (Milissa), our puppy (Mason) and I stayed here over the Labor Day Weekend. What a great kampground (everything is with a "K" as it's KOA). We had tent site #95 right on the creek. It happened to rain every night (12am-6am) but didn't hinder our vacation. They have a wonderful K9 Kamp that is fenced in and has... More
