The exhibits and museum is very nice as is the video explaining what you may find. They give you a hammer to use to smash open rocks looking for "diamonds" but frankly they are easier to spot in bright sunlight on the ground especially after it rains.

I'd heard of Herkimer diamonds, but never dreamed I'd actually get to visit the place where they're mined. A missed exit led me to Herkimer, so I wen to the mine. I decided not to sit in the hot sun bashing open rocks in search of a chance crystal or three, but it would have been a great activity for... More

I spent 2 days in July in the Herkimer Diamond Mines and had a great time! We were staying at the KOA in one of the cabins that were on the property and could easily walk into the mine and back to our cabin which was helpful because we took tons of showers! The first day we did not get... More

They needed to have people out there giving some advice to the first timers especially with children. We gave up and paid extra to "pan" for diamonds which actually did give the kids some diamond's. Its a racket to get you to spend more money. Very hot...needed some shade tents put up for the small children and elderly to get... More

My family was here over the 4th of July weekend and had a great time. So much fun actually that we went 2 days. My kids are 16, 14, and 11. I guess it proves that even "big" boys like breaking things. We made some nice finds, but most of what we found were smaller stones. We stayed at the... More

Mining for Herkimer Diamonds takes a lot of work but the payoff can be amazing and the experience is definitely going to remain a fun memory for my family. I don't know that I would want to be out in those fields or rock any later in the summer than we were (we were there in the last week of... More

You can easily spend a few hours here and not notice. They provide you with a hammer with your admission, but its better if you bring in your own equipment. Most of the gems you will find will most likely be on the ground until you get use to mining in the rock wall. The entrance fee can seem high,... More

We had a really fun time at Herkimer Diamonds. Upon arrival you will be given a hammer with your admission fee. There are also little plastic baggies to put your diamonds in. The older lady at the counter was not very helpful. She was very impatient. This was our first time here and she really didn't give us any pointers.... More

This was a nice place to spend an afternoon. For a fee, they supply you with a hammer and chisel and you can try your hand at finding Herkimer Diamonds, by splitting rocks. It is difficult at first, but your best luck may be just wandering around and looking on the ground. We were, get this, lucking enough to get... More

It seems a bit overpriced to dig rocks and hope for some quartz or other fascinating find. The gift shop is so outdated and over priced. With the number of folks that visit there, it seems that the prices could be better and the shop updated.
