Yesterday (8/19/2014) we scheduled a day trip with our grand kids traveling three hours away from home. We planned on leaving our home at 8 AM and arriving at Howe Caverns near Albany by 11 AM and after that adventure heading back and stopping at the Herkimer Diamond Mines arriving around 4 PM for two hours of Diamond Mining as... Visited the Diamond Mine for the third time in three years. My son enjoys mining and has found some nice diamonds. Sometimes it's easy and some times it's work, but if your willing you'll find diamonds. The admission ($11) is good for the day so you can come and go as you wish. I like to bring an empty 5... More

We took a day trip to the mine with a 15 and 16 year old and had a great time. It cost $11.00 per person and they have limited equipment to borrow. It was hot, my advice would be go on a cool day because the rocks radiate heat. Bring water! There is a wall of rock with loose rocks... More

My daughter loves gems, so we thought this would be a fun activity for us as a family. And it was for about ten minutes until the reality that you just paid money to slave in the dirt for crystals sets in. Okay, yes, glad we went but you're best off buying a bag of gems rather than mining for... More

We got there and watched the Video, got our hammers and walked to the mine.its not far.And then aimlessly wandered around.you had to dig into a solid rock wall and that just didnt go to well with a hammer and chisel.all the rocks laying on the ground and there were many of them were already picked over and we found hardly... If you ever wanted to know what it is like to mine this is the place. It has cabins, a KOA Campsites, pool to swim in if you camp there. there is a store that has so many rocks even if you were not a rock hound you will be. we spent over 4 hours there. my 11 year grandson... More

The Herkimer Diamond Mines Resort is an interesting place to visit for rock hounds and novices alike. This particular company is located in the middle of New York State (exit 30 off I-90 and 7 miles north on Route 28). For $11 (ages 13 + up) + $9 (for ages 5-12) as of July 2014, you can look for these... More

The exhibits and museum is very nice as is the video explaining what you may find. They give you a hammer to use to smash open rocks looking for "diamonds" but frankly they are easier to spot in bright sunlight on the ground especially after it rains.

I'd heard of Herkimer diamonds, but never dreamed I'd actually get to visit the place where they're mined. A missed exit led me to Herkimer, so I wen to the mine. I decided not to sit in the hot sun bashing open rocks in search of a chance crystal or three, but it would have been a great activity for... More

I spent 2 days in July in the Herkimer Diamond Mines and had a great time! We were staying at the KOA in one of the cabins that were on the property and could easily walk into the mine and back to our cabin which was helpful because we took tons of showers! The first day we did not get... More
