Worth the subway ride!

If you are staying in Manhattan and want a day at the beach it is well worth a trip to Rockaway, a lovely sandy beach on which to sunbathe or there is surfing for the more active.

We visited Rockaway Beach on a day trip from Manhattan. The last part of the subway ride has the most beautiful views, as the A train wends its way across Jamaica Bay & through the wildlife reserve. We changed onto the S train at Broad Channel & got off at the last stop. The beach was only a few minutes... More

My first time at Rockaway Beach and it was Amazing. New broad walk in which you can cycle, jog, walk and enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean.

Rockaway is the perfect destination for all ages. Families have plenty of beach access and small shops to explore. College kids have bars within walking distance. The art scene is every hipster's dream. I would highly recommend adding Rockaway Beach to your destination bucket list.

Wonderful, wide, immense beach where to walk freely, take sun, play and feel completely immersed in the nature. The beach is reachable by the subway, and it's so weird. On the one side, the nature with white sand, ocean and immense spaces; on the other side blocks of houses and cottages, as if you were on the day after of... More

As someone who formerly lived in Rockaway Beach,I can definitely say that it is a nice area & while it can get cold in the winter, what I enjoy the most is the stands along the beach & it does have a few restaurants & bars that I would recommend.Plus the fact that during the summer it is a great place... If you are an out-of-towner an do not surf you are much better off at Brighton Beach/ Coney Island - more colorful. If you live in New York City and the subway ride on the A is not too long for you, it is a nice place to spend a day at the beach. Nothing much to do or see... More

Not sure it'd be high on my list to return to, but as part of a tour we took through the more distant parts of Queens and Brooklyn it was an enjoyable stop.

On New Years Day, I went to Beach 119th Street in Rockaway Park, New York and took the plunge in the Atlantic Ocean with about 2 dozen peoples. This was the first, but not the last plunge I will take. There are some things on my budget list that should be placed on my annual list. HAPPY NEW YEAR

Coming from the UK, I did not know much about the Rockaways apart from this area is close to JFK. I presumed its proximity to the airport would mean it would not be a great place to spend time. I was very wrong about this - the beaches were absolutely stunning, and really empty (late September but stunning weather). Locals... More
