We happened on this small, unassuming museum while visiting shops along Route 66. Very much a "home grown" museum, it offered a look at Gallup's early days -- and especially its mining families. It is staffed by a man who truly loves his job and who wants to make every visitor feel welcome. Don't expect a fancy big city museum.

Neat exhibits about the local area although some of the exhibits would be more interesting to someone who knows people from the area.

It shows the history of when Gallup was coal mining town with artifacts and memorabilia from that period.Hence one of the streets in called Coal street because of that time period.

So, it is supposed to be a historical museum and it probably is, particularly if you like the history of coal. The quality of the material is uneven from roller skates to bicycles, it feels like a cluttered second hand shop. We did like Virgil, who was a little overbearing but wanting to pass on his knowledge.

We arrived as Virgil had just opened up and then we spent the next 3/4 hour talking with him. We hardly saw the museum but had a fascinating time talking about the culture of the various Indian tribes. An absolute must visit.

There is not much to do in downtown Gallup but trading posts, but the Rex Museum is a definite stop. Located on the corner just past the entrance of downtown Gallup, it does not appear to be much. Inside much to see in this small museum is a concentrated exhibit of the mining history and many other interesting objects. Virgil,... More

We got in between two school tours and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Learned more about the history of Gallup in 30 minutes than we could have imagined. The volunteer staff really know their city and their pride shows.

While walking along Historic Route 66 in Gallup, we came across this small museum. Since local museums can be a great source of the local history, we stopped in. It is very small, but full of pictures, artifacts and books. My husband saw items he had never seen before, a lot of old technology items, making it a very good... More
