This is one of two remnants of the old Denver & Rio Grande network of three-foot gauge railroads which once extended from Denver to Salt Lake City and Santa Fe in a vast network mostly in scenic portions of the Colorado mountains. The other remnant is the Durango & Silverton -- also recommended. The history is fascinating. Riding from Chama... more

We had ridden the Durango-Silverton train several times and thought it wonderful, but the Cumbres-Toltec experience was superior. We chose the parlor car and didn't regret the extra cost for one moment. It was just a kick!! The car is beautiful, the costumed ladies serving delicious snacks and beverages, in addition to dispensing interesting history and local folk lore, were... more

We went to Chama with the express intention of riding this train, and were not disappointed. The scenery is beautiful, the service is wonderful, the lunch served at the mid way point is great, and the train itself is a real treat. We spent the extra money for the parlor car, and thought it was well worth what we paid.... more

Thanks to the discovery of gas/ oil in this area a narrow gauge railroad was preserved for all of us to enjoy today. When the steam engines were retired in 1967, the railroad was nearly scrapped. The states of New Mexico and Colorado joined up to buy the railroad. Since then the state has managed the railroads and allowed a... more

This is a great experience with history and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It takes you back in time and is an adventure for kids regardless of age (I'm 59). After riding once or twice a year for several years I decided to buy a season pass this year and ride as often as I can. more

We did this trip in late July. We took the bus from Antonito to Chama and then the train trip back. The bus ride was quick and nice. You get some nice scenery on the way and it's a nice way to relax. Once we got to Chama we had about 15 minutes to spare. It would have been nice... more

We did the Cinderbear Express trip in July 2009 with three kids. We all loved it! It was a shortened version of the regular trips (a little more than an hour each way) and was the perfect length for little ones. The ride went to Cumbres Pass where it stopped for lunch before returning to Chama. The scenery was spectacular.... more

We rode the motorcoach from Antonito to Chama and returned by train... tourist class. I could not stay in my seat for more than two minutes.. had to go to the observation car to snap pictures and just enjoy the ride! The narration from the 'Friends' volunteer was fantastic. We traveled from Texas to ride this train AND the Durango/Silverton... more

My husband and I took the bus from Chama to Antonito and rode the train back. The entire trip was fabulous - my husband isn't usually enthusiastic, but he RAVED about this excursion and was all smiles. The bus trip is quick, barely an hour, and it's in a nice motor coach with a bathroom. You have just enough time... more
