Owner description: Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories. Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and a cherished wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food. Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages. Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.

Boschendal has a very beautiful winery, where the tasting used to take place (weather condition) under the shadowns of a big tree. Despite the fact that their wine is not among the best wines from South Africa ( this is my opinion), they do have a chocolate-wine pairing that is nice. If you have time, it worth a visit.

We went for a private picnic lunch - for 180 rand (like $15 per person) you get a genuine beautiful picnic basket that changes seasonally. We had roast chicken, duck pate, cheeses, salmon spread, a classic baguette, potatoes, coleslaw, mozzarella & tomato salad, jams, did i say cheese?, and a delicious dessert - this is a must if you are... I am not sure that the service or the wines at Boschendal's are that exceptional and outstanding. What still makes it my favourite vineyard in the Western Cape is the ambience provided by one of the most beautiful Dutch building complexes in the Cape, total environment with the flower garden, the fowl, the oak trees alley, the Manor House and... Although the location at Boschendal's is great we have been disappointed by the service (been there for Picknick). Lot of service staff not knowing what to do; warm Champagne, quite some time waiting until Picnic basket was delivered .......

I love, love, LOVED staying at the Boschendal Orchard Cottages. The grounds are immaculate, and it’s so easy to feel relaxed when everything, both outdoors and indoors, is so pristine. The Orchard Cottages are brand new and incredibly well done. They’re outfitted with high-end kitchen gear and the beds/linens are great. Definitely get the breakfast baskets, which are delivered to... More

This was the real deal of wineries and a step back into South Africa's illustrious history, and grand old plantations. Elegant and reminiscent of old south plantations. Great wine tasting under an old oak tree and tea and cupcakes at the restaurant. The wine servers were knowledgeable and the service was excellent.

We spent three nights in one of the beautifully styled, spacious cottages. The views are stunning and we really enjoyed the walking trail. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were all incredibly friendly. The food was exceptional. A great selection too. The wine is wonderful and really reasonably priced. The wine tasting was fun and a good... More

I went back for the first time in 30 years. What a shambles the wine tasting experience is. To be told that you will be served outside and take it or leave is total nonsense. It took a hour for the hopelss servers to put five samples into my glass. One wine passed as being more than sip able. Offensively... More

This wine estate has many attractions on offer ranging from picnics on the lawns to a resturant , a old historic manor house and a wine tasting area with a cellar tour . The cellar tour lasts about 20 minutes and this is followed by a conducted wine tasting which consists of 5 wines . The cost of a cellar... More
