Description: Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One...
Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories. Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and a cherished wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food. Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages. Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.

Very impressed, such a relaxing place to be. Stopped for a coffee on our way to our hotel and then returned for lunch the following day as we liked it so much. We tried the pique nique style lunch which was fabulous. Lots of space for kids to play too. Very popular so you need to book at busy times.

Yet another wonderful winery (not to far east of Stellenbosch) that really does 'do' lunch. Having explored the beautiful grounds and buildings we settled for eating in the deli. This was more modest than the main restaurant but the Club Sandwich I had was very filling and tasty. Everyone tried the soup that was ordered and wished they'd chosen that... More

Did the picnic in the grounds, very casual, very nice surrounds...could have slept all afternoon. Food was good and plentiful if not extraordinary, but hit the spot nicely. Nice for a lazy day after the wine tram.

We had a very interesting cellar tour, with only my partner and I on it, led by Keith. This was followed by a wine tasting with a chocolate pairing. As my partner was driving he did not have a tasting, but there was no problem with him sharing small sips and bites of mine. This was perfect. Afterwards we visited... More

We stopped here for a tour of the winery and vineyards. The vineyard tour took us around this beautiful property in a wagon attached to a tractor. The property is beautiful and the views were outstanding. The winery tour was short but informative. We stayed for some tasting which allowed us to select 5 from an extensive list of wines.... More

Definitely worth a visit. The grounds & buildings are what one imagines a cape wine estate to look like. As for the setting, `ABSOLUTE STUNNING ` Cannot comment on the wine as I am not a wine drinker. Food good .

The Boschendal winery and picnic may be one of the highest rated on tripadvisor but don't let that fool you into thinking it's the best. It's was one of the original wine estates to offer picnics but it's now so commercial it's not an experience I can recommend. The picnic is very nice and you get plenty of food, however... More

We had an awesome picnic under the trees with kids & teddy bears and can declare that the baskets provided were choc-a-block full of treats, surprises & deliciousness!!! (Down side: they didn't have enough waiters for the day so we were pretty much left to our own devices...)

Worth a visit if only for the location which is stunning. We had an enjoyable tasting but we enjoyed better wines elsewhere in the area eg La Motte.

We called in here having read good reviews. There is lots on offer such as picnic baskets. We went for the informal cafe for lunch. The salads were excellent and attentive service. I had the smoked chicken salad which was tasty. I would call here again.
