Discover Portsmouth is an excellent place to begin your visit. It's located right across from the John Paul Jones House in the historic part of town. In fact admission to the John Paul Jones House... Portsmouth were incredibly helpful and provided a plethora of information about things to do and places to go. Not sure I enjoyed the video about Portsmouth's history as much as the reviewers, but well worth the 12 minutes.

Well worth a visit as a starting point, the Center is located corner of Islington and Middle Street and is far more than a visitor center. Previously the former city library building, it was converted into a new multi-functional Center by the Portsmouth Historical Society, providing historical, cultural and artistic venue information 7 days a week from March thru December... We had a great time looking at all the shops and your new bridge. There was a lot of nice places to sit and have a drink and made you feel like you don't have any cares in the world.

Discover Portsmouth a great resource for visitors and locals. It's a branch of the Portsmouth Historical Society. It's housed in two historic Federal-style buildings dating back to circa 1810---one was formerly the home of grocer Thomas Morton, the other was first Portsmouth Academy, next home to a Civil War memorial, then Portsmouth's first public library. Here a visitor can watch... More

Very friendly and good advice from the staff; clean bathrooms and nice gift shop. Coupons offered for places of interest, and good suggestions for lunch. Better map provided here than what you pick up in some of the shops. Stop here first if visiting Portsmouth, NH!
