- Mary FEvergreen, Colorado11 contributionsFort Robinson VisitThis place was an unexpected find for us. We stayed in the lodge. Our room was simple but comfortable. The veranda was a relaxing place to watch all the activities. We learned so much history about the area! We enjoyed a chuckwagon breakfast, horse-drawn history tour and museums. There were lots of multigenerational families visiting and everyone looked to be having a great time. We plan to go back again!Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 11, 2023
- Barry GGlendive, Montana271 contributionsUnbelievable Historical Location & Looks Like a Nice Place to CampWent to Ft. Robinson primarily for the Post Playhouse theatre for live theatre productions. However, also took in the children's park for our little ones to play on. Had a picnic. Rode in a stagecoach. Large area for multiple types of outdoor activities. If you're going to be in Nebraska for several days and accessing their park system, recommend that you purchase an annual permit in advance for your vehicle so that you don't have to purchase a park entrance fee daily.Visited July 2023Written July 10, 2023
- Greg SShakopee, Minnesota54 contributionsFt Robinson. Jewel of NebraskaGreat couple of days here. We stayed at the lodge….good rooms and shower. No tv as plenty to do here. Reasonable rates and food. There seems to be lots of families here and there wre cookouts, tubing, horseback riding etc. great place for a bike ride. The wifi is only available near the Lodge office, restaurant..ok but not fast. Beautiful well kept buildings and grounds. A great way to learn about history.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2023
- Randy H10 contributionsOne Night StayWife and I stayed during off-season. We had a room on the second floor of lodge and were the only ones on that floor. Another couple was the only ones of the first floor. Quiet and peaceful for a one night stay. Bed was comfortable; had a good night's rest. Drove around the park and it has a lot to offer! Great place to take family with no wi-fi this time of year. Going back for sure!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 14, 2023
- F4981JCmichaelsVancouver, Washington2,105 contributionsNondescript Crazy Horse memorial is worth a visit here.I got here late in the day, so no time to explore. But the main reason I stopped here was to see the memorial honoring Crazy Horse, who was killed at this location. I even had to dodge a rainstorm to see it, but it was worth it. As for the rest of the park, judging from the backed up line about four deep at the main entrance, it is quite a popular location. It has a nice campground, and many historic buildings.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten October 23, 2023

Been here several times, but never off-season. WE stayed at the old Officer's Quarters and the dinning room was closed and no breakfast offered either. No campfire nights, etc. We did find a Dairy Queen in Crawford open, or would have been forced to drive all the way to Chadron to find some food. LOL.

We spent four nights in the Bandmaster cabin. While the accommodations aren’t fancy, they are clean and comfortable. We had a satisfying breakfast at the lodge restaurant, loved our long horseback trail ride, and enjoyed the rodeo and a steak cookout (albeit in the rain). We hiked many trails nearby. There is a lot to do within an easy drive (Toadstool Geologic Park and Chadron State Park). The scenery is incredible, with birds and antelope everywhere. I would highly recommend creating memories here!

I spotted this park in 2017 while driving for a commercial company and thought it looked interesting enough to explore further in the future. Since we were going to be in the area, we made reservations for a full-service campground. The spot was very large and was able to accommodate both our toad and dolly, lus RV of course. Through no fault of their own, several campsites were underwater due to the weather. The post museum is worth a look around too.

My family came here and spent the day. We did the horse-drawn carriage tour which was great; a great way to see the whole area and learn about the history. I'd highly recommend a tour. You go to buy tickets as soon as you get there. We had lunch at Fort Robinson Restaurant in the main building. The food was good; there weren't a ton of healthy choices. The service was very good. There's a gift shop in this building and you can wander around upstairs too. We then went on a Jeep tour with a great guide as well. He drove us all around the hills and even pointed out some birds. We checked out the museums a little bit. On the way home we saw bison.

If you get a chance to talk to Becky, she used to work at the historical society, and she can tell you in great detail the history of Fort Robinson. I highly recommend the jeep ride. It is an experience you won't soon forget. When I heard that we were staying the officers barracks, I didn't have high hopes. But you have to remember that actual Army officers have not stayed there in decades. I stayed in Camanche Hall with a large group. After you get used to the creeky floors of a historical building, it is pretty cool. The kitchen has everything you could need. The bed is comfortable, and towels are plush, and you have everything you need for a good nights sleep including fans and heaters. The sitting room furniture if comfortable.

I stopped by Fort Robinson for a quick visit, unlike many cavalry forts which are mostly gone with just a few remnant buildings, or, reconstructions, this fort enjoyed a long history and was turned over to other agencies for their use when the military had no further use for the buildings, thus, it is mostly preserved. There are interesting elements here such as the horse barns, and seeing a variety of buildings built over a considerable time span, this, to me make it a very interesting view into the past.

Our family has held a family reunion at Ft. Robinson for the better part of 20 years and we always enjoy the stay. As one of the most intact forts from the days of the cavalry and the "Indian Wars", you and your family can literally see much of the area and building as they were back in the day.
The accommodations are well maintained and give you a chance to live in a former officer, or general's home. They are air conditioned and have plumbing so thankfully they aren't as rustic as would have been in the late 1800's. You find many of the guests are repeat visitors for many years and enjoy the slow pace of life and recreation in the area.
We enjoyed hiking in the area and were very close to deer, antelope, and turkey's in the area. We also did some horseback riding where we were near the local bison heard and other wildlife. Our next door neighbors had great success fishing in one of the many local lakes.
The performances at the Playhouse are definitely something you should take in while in the area. They are very popular and tickets can sometimes be difficult to obtain so you should purchase well in advance if possible.
You can also take side trips to the Toadstool Park and the Hudson-Meng Bison Bone archeological dig site that are relatively close and worth the trip.
I look forward to going back again to see more of this great park every year.

Reserve in ADVANCE!!
Summer season - hike, horseback, jeep exploring, swim, etc. - not sure what costs are. If coming in Spring/Fall - see what activities are available.
Family reserved the officer's barracks, had a family gathering there - wheelchair access for this building - bottom floor bathroom and bedroom. 2nd floor - two bathrooms numerous bedrooms. 3rd floor- bedrooms. Not all barracks have wheelchair access, flight of stairs to access the 2nd and 3rd floors.
Kitchen a little small - but eating areas spacious. If preparing for a huge gathering - contact the park to see what kitchen supplies they do/don't have. Kitchen - has a refrigerator, stove, microwave.
Check to see if the buildings have air conditioning/heat - not sure if all do.
Make sure you check for ticks - was there in spring - tick season - so plan accordingly.
Park has RV hookups as well.

I've camped here many times and truly enjoyed every stay. Always something to do. The area is beautiful and brimming with history.
Highlights::
* Trail Side Museum's Clash of the Mammoths exhibit and awesome gift shop
* Attend a Melodrama - They actually bring in professional actors and the plays are amazing!
* Tube down the White River
* Go on a trail ride and a stage coach ride
* Go to the Crawford rodeo on Thursday night
* Eat and participate in the outdoor cookouts
While you're in the area.... Visit the Museum of the Fur Trade in nearby Chadron. You may think that sounds boring but believe me, their collection is WORLD CLASS. An absolute MUST SEE if there's a history buff in your group.

I didn't expect to spend a whole day here but I did. There is an incredible amount of history and historical artifacts here. The place is exceptionally well maintained too. I was travelling by motorcycle and unfortunately did not have space for the numerous items in the gift shop that appealed to me. Well done. This is an asset to the state of Nebraska and a must-see for any fans of western/US history.

We have reservations for June 2023 for Brick 15A and 15B. Do you have floorplans or photos for them?

We have booked one of the big brick officers' quarters for three nights in August. The listing doesn't list any air conditioning and temperatures reach into the 100's during the summer. Just how hot do these accommodations get in August. Will it be too uncomfortable to enjoy ourselves and sleep at night?

We will be visiting Ft Robinson Sept 13-17. Will either the jeep tours or carriage tours be available. Also are any of the restaurants open?

When you say off-season, what dates do you mean exactly? You said you went in September; I am going to be there Labor Day Weekend. Is that still "in season?"

Is Commanche Hall air conditioned? We will be there on the 4th of July so I imagine it would be unbearable without air conditioning. I assumed it would, but an old trip report said it didn't. Has a/c been added to the house? We will be staying in one of the double rooms with a private bathroom. Will towels bedding and toilet paper soap be provided? Two past guests mentioned mice and bats. Is that still a problem?

Prices for activities? Horseback riding, Jeep/stagecoach, cookouts, kayak rentals? Planning a trip with 3 kiddos and curious what to expect for costs. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

We will be traveling through this area in July and have a couple of hours to spend in the park. Could someone elaborate on the tours offered? I could not find much on the website. We are interested in history and photographing wildlife and landscapes. Is this a park we can drive through or do you recommend a tour?
VictoriaD1962
Eagle, NE34 contributions
You cannot drive through the area where you would get good photos of wildlife and landscapes. We did the 50 minute jeep ride and got photos of big horn sheep, antelope, flowers, and the beautiful view from the top. The jeep ride is $13/person. And one jeep can take 5 passengers for sure, possibly 6. You need to go to Nebraska Game and Parks website, then locate Fort Robinson. They also have other activities too--horseback riding, wagon rides, etc. They emailed me extra info after I emailed them questions about the swimming pool. Email address is ngpc.Fort.Robinson@nebraska.gov or call them at 308-665-2900. There are three different museums on the grounds and different buildings you can drive to on the grounds. When you contact NGP, ask them to send you a map of the grounds. But also ask them for the phone number of the Nebraska Historical Society who operates one museum. The second museum, Trailside Museum. is operated by the University of Nebraska. It was awesome too! Two hours isn't nearly enough time and you are smart to plan ahead of time as to what activities!

We didn't spend the night and didn't have time to tour the cabins
but I think they have everything. I want to go back and stay in the officer's quarters.
