I've taken my daughter to this place a few times and we always find it enjoyable. I have also taken friends from out of town and they love that they get a sense of the "old west" that kansas city was. My daughter still feels sad for the mule.

We visited the Arabia museum during a weekend in Kansas City on a Saturday when the city market was hopping. What a cool place! The tour guide, also a preservationist, was interesting and informative, and one of the excavators and owners of the museum and its artifacts greeted our group after the film. Really an amazing window into life on... More

I drove a tour bus for over 20 yrs.. Picked up a lot of groups headed out of town but toured around Kansas City also. One of the biggest comments about this exhibit was..Oh no not another museum. When the folks came back to the bus the biggest comment was...you haven't allowed enough time to see this properly. The staff... More

I've done this tour twice. Sometimes these kind of museums can be little bang for your buck, but not Steamboat Arabia. The video and the moderator do a great job of telling the story and the artifacts are varied and plentiful. I think most ages would enjoy this museum, save for very young children. There is nothing to touch or... More

We accidentally came upon this museum while spending time in the River Market area in Kansas City. We decided to tour it and were not disappointed. The whole story of this family uncovering a sunken steamboat from the middle of a farm field is fascinating. The displays are very nicely done and very informative. We got to meet David Hawley,... Spent a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon at this interesting museum. Well worth the time and the admission fee for this privately operated attraction. The Arabia was a river steamer that hit a tree snag and sank in the Missouri River more than 100 years ago. The river moves over time and the wreck ended up 40 feet... More

This is the best museum collection of pre Civil War materials including everything from boots to tools and the story behind the discovery and collection of these historical items is just amazing and profound. Admission is reasonably priced and you should expect to take at least two or more hours for your visit. Your visit will start out with at... More

Awesome tour. You will walk away inspired, humbled and laughing. History is brought to life by funny, passionate tour guides. Reoccurring theme is...no experts here, this adventure was made possible by determined folks who did the impossible, wouldn't take no for an answer and made sure the story got told.....and told well! I'm loving it. Thank you. But shouldn't Kansas... More

We are glad you enjoyed your visit! The short answer to your question is: the city pre-dates the state. Westport Landing (present-day downtown KC) was founded in 1834 as a steamboat landing and incorporated as the Town of Kansas in 1850. Kansas Territory was established in 1854 (thanks to the Kansas-Nebraska Act) and achieved statehood in 1861. Locals are touchy... More
