I've been a Jackson Zoo regular for nearly 50 years and have seen it through ups and downs. The zoo faces problems that are common to older zoos across the US. Funding is always a problem. The surrounding neighborhood has changed and many visitors from the suburbs no longer want to travel in the urban area in which the zoo... More

I felt so bad for the animals. Many were showing signs of distress. Pacing and panting. Some areas had really bad odors. The signage needs updating. A few of the areas did not have any animals in them. The monkeys were very entertaining though. The youngest one was taking a stick and swinging at an older one and playing chase.

I love zoos. I have been to them all over the south with my children. This truly was one of my favorites. The way it is set up, you feel like you are close enough to the animals to touch them. They had animals I had never seen before, like a pack of red wolves. Amazing animals!! They also have... More

Having worked at a zoo before, it's terrible to see such awful living conditions for these poor animals. The only exhibit that I saw fit was the tiger area (the tigers are very friendly, too!). But what animals they do house on the property seem dirty and unoccupied. This zoo needs to be shut down for the animals' sakes.

I have been visiting the Jackson Zoo for 40 years. Some of my fondest childhood memories took place there. I took my children when they were young every few months. The zoo staff is fantastic, but their funding has dramatically decreased over the years. We recently lost our elephants to another zoo. Our zoo is still better than no zoo... More

I just spend too much of my time reading these reviews on this site! I have to disagree with most of the negative ones. We have a five year old and go several times a year. The animals always look great and I go enough to see the zoo keepers interacting with the animals and can tell they truly care... More

We almost didn't go because we had read the reviews from previous attendants, I'm glad we ignored them! We went early in the morning the first weekend in November. I had read in the reviews that the animals were malnourished and depressed, I did not find that to be the case at all. In fact, I found it to be... More

We visited the zoo on a Wedneday in November. We saw about 20 other visitors during our 3 hour visit. Our party included three children (9 months, 19 months and 3.5 years old), two grandparents and two parents. The zoo is comfortable to walk for old and young alike, and the smart layout ties the end back to the entrance/exit.... More

We came from out of state & expected something totally different. For Jackson to be the capital, this zoo lacked a lot. The animals looked starved, some animals looked to not even have water in the 100 degree heat. I have been to plenty of zoo's & I have never seen tigers & leopards look so skinny. We received a... This is a sweet little zoo. That's just my description. It's really not that small and will take a little while to see, so wear comfortable shoes. It is a good sized zoo and despite the bad reviews we decided to visit anyway. The GPS did take us through an area we would not normally have gone but with no... More
