It is the city's signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city's resolve and resilience. The light was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and is notable for its several female lightkeepers, including Maria Younghans, who tended the light for 53 years. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the light's operation. After being declared surplus property in 1968, the Biloxi Lighthouse was deeded to the City of Biloxi, which eventually opened it to public tours. The lighthouse has withstood many storms over the years. Katrina's storm surge enveloped a third of the 64-foot tall lighthouse, and the constant pounding from the water and winds toppled many bricks that lined the interior of the cast iron tower. The storm’s winds also broke many of the windows in the light cupola and destroyed the structure's electrical systemIn March 2010, the city re-opened the lighthouse to public tours after a 14-month, $400,000 restoration that was funded by FEMA and MEMA and completed by Biloxi contractor J.O. Collins. « less

This small, iron lighthouse has historical significance, and is conveniently located in from of the Visitors Center. There are about 75 steps on a spiral stair case to climb to the top. It is actually quite amazing to see the water marks for the storm surges during hurricanes Katrina Camille. All these things are well and good, but the per... More

While you are entitled to your opinions, some of the things mentioned in your review are mind boggling. Out of 79 Lighthouses I have visited, $5 is the cheapest rate I have paid to climb, some are much more. All tour proceeds go towards the maintenance of the Biloxi Lighthouse that is privately owned by the City of Biloxi (since... More

It is a small lighthouse with much history. It lights up at night with much beauty. If you cross the road to the visitor's center, they have a visual display for the lighthouse it's self.

A very small lighthouse. I am glad I took the time to visit. You have to get your ticket to the lighthouse at the visitor center directly across the street from the lighthouse. A short climb with some nice views. It is very hot so I would suggest an early morning visit. The most interesting part for me was the... More

When you see the marks of the water levels of the hurricanes before Katrina, including Camille, it is telling of what this town went through. Be sure to see the movie in the visitor center.

This was a good view of the lighthouse, however, the road could use grating. It was quite bumpy and had a lot of pot holes. We just took photos for a lighthouse lover friend. Do not know if you could actually go in or not.

So happy they were able to restore this land mark of Biloxi. The view from the top was wonderful. It was wonderful to be there.

It was a nice lighthouse next to a beautiful beach. I thought it would be a little bit bigger and closer to the water. It is located in the median. I think that if I had been able to go into the visitor's center I might have appreciated it more.

This lighthouse is in the middle of highway 90 - an extremely, extremely busy road. It was hard to take decent pictures unless you wanted vehicles on the road in front of it. We parked at the visitor center. The only chance we had to visit was the afternoon & we knew tours were only offered in the morning. We... More

Must take a tour at the visitor's center in front of Lighthouse . It tell's alot and the story behind the beautiful Lighthouse that is in the center of road , and stands very commanding and a much needed beacon in the night . It was damaged a few times by the storms over periods of time but seems restored... More
