It had been close to 30 years since I had taken the boat to Ship Island. Aside from 2 sets of restrooms, 2 picnic pavilions, a snack bar, chair and umbrella rentals, and the fort, there is just the beach. No problems, no hassles, just a very good place to unwind and appreciate some of the simpler things in life.... More

whether you want to spend the day being lazy on the beach, or collecting seashells, or exploring the old fort, this place has something for everyone. It really is historical and beautiful at the same time. The beach rental chairs and umbrellas come at a great value to

There is an excursion boat that goes to Ship Island and unless you have access to your own boat or a seaplane this is the only way to get here. If you go by excursion boat be sure to plan on spending the day there and bring along the things you may need. There are facilities on the island but... More

Ship island has a wonderful history that included civil war notations to gambling wheels. The fort has been restored from both Camille and Katrina and is open for tours. You get a sense of what it was like to defend the gulf coast against wouldbe attackers. The ferry is part of the fun and hosts a eclectic crew that will... More

I have been going to Ship Island since I was a child and still love going as an adult. The excursion out to the island, a tour of the Fort, and a fun afternoon on the beach makes a great weekend trip.

Seriously? This is worth a one hour ferry ride each way? I have been to many parks & beaches & islands around the world...what an embarrassment to have this in my home area for tourists to see. Only is the south USA would people be allowed to SMOKE and leave cigarette butts in the sand on a protected environmental government... More

I grew up in Ocean Springs so my island is Horn Island. But I have been to Ship Island over 100 times and even ridden the excusion a bunch over the years when I was boatless or on some school trip etc. The barrier islands are what make it worthwhile to leave her and put up with all the casinos... We traveled during the off season so not very many people on the day we went made for a very nice quiet day on the beach. The boat ride out to the beach was fun got to see dolphins jumping in the wake of the boat. While on the island also saw a stingray and more dolphins. Be sure and... More

I loved that you have to take a boat out to this spot. Also I loved the old Civil War fort on the island. The wildlife reserve aspect of it was also very interesting. It is a beautiful location and with a lot to see. The perfect spot to see a few sights, animal watch and relax.

This side trip is such fun! First, there is the boat ride out to the island; then you can claim a table on the wooden deck and stay in the shade of the roof, or you can take to the beach and collect shells and swim. Don't miss the fort!
