We took our young kids (3, 6, 8) to the Soudan mines this summer. Everyone had a blast. It was a great learning experience for the kids and the whole family enjoyed the scenic views, touring the old mining buildings and going underground for the mine tour. We visited the Soudan Underground Mine State Park on Sun., Sep. 28, 2008. We were introduced to our guide and donned hard hats for a fast elevator trip 2400 feet into the earth. We then boarded a narrow guage train for a trip through the underground tunnels, with stops for the guide to explain the mining process. Our guide was... more

I have been to the Soudan Underground Mine twice in one year. It is absolutly amazing. The tour is fairly cheap and it is about an hour and a half. You will see how the miners worked and the working conditions. It is without a doubt an unforgetable experience! more

This state park (park admission fis free) is the site of two interesting attractions. First, it is the site of the oldest iron ore mine in the state. One can go down an interesting 1/2 mile elevator ride to the deepest level of the mine and take a tour. I didn't expect to learn much from the tour, having been... more
