The lock and dam is a very interesting place if you take the time to explore it. Access is a little tricky. You need to drive or walk down from West River Parkway down a long ramp that starts just north of the Ford Bridge.

I don't understand why this is even on a list to be rated. You go and no one is there. It's just a little dam alone with nothing to see.

Great Views along with stone arch bridge and river front. Parking during the week is easy and only costs you a $1. This is a must see for visitors.

Easy parking, feel like your in the wilderness. Great signage. You can watch a lock work. There is a wild life area, with great bird watching.

We happened upon Lock and Dam #1 when we were biking on the River Road Trail. What started as a quick side trip turned into a very interesting and educational hour. The lock and dam are open to the public and are free. We did not get to see the lock in action but it is still a very impressive... More

View of power plant put in place by Henry Ford to support the plant he constructed in Saint Paul during the 1920's to produce model T's. The plant continued in operation until last year. This lock was the head of navigation on the Minnissippi until the lock at Saint Anthony Falls was built

Great to experience from a small watercraft--the lock is easily 60 feet high and moves rather quickly. A great experience for the family, open 7 days/week while navigable.

Dam number 1, even though there are 2 dams further upriver. This dam is nice, due to it's history and location. It is located just east of Minnehaha park and the beautiful falls within, and between the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The damn was used to power the Ford Motor Co. plant to the east. Today, the... More
