Took a short ride from Minnihaha Falls park to visit the locks along the Mississippi River. Out of the two that were opened in 1917 one is still used and operational. Nice walking tour that takes about 45 minutes and well worth doing. The lockmaster on site was very informative. Parking is limited. Entry is free.

We stumbled upon this self-guided tour of the Lock and Dam and found ourselves really enjoying the beauty of the site, the sound of the rushing water over the dam, the flora and fauna, and the easy-to-understand explanatory boards. While we were not lucky enough to see a vessel use the lock, the site itself was enough. We spent maybe... More

We decided to take a ride along the river and saw the sign - glad we stopped. It is a nice view of the dam and falls. A relaxing spot along the way and a good spot for spot to do his call of nature - don't forget to pick up the remains.

The view of the dam is pretty good. Relaxing. wish I had read the other reviews when I went as I would have known what to look for when there.

We visited with our three young kids who enjoyed seeing the locks in action. A large barge came through when we were there which was very cool, but otherwise not a ton to see. It's a cool stop if you're in the area though.

If you are on the West River Parkway heading south, drive under the Ford Bridge and you will arrive at the Lock and Dam #1. Neat to see when the river is high like it is right now. If you are lucky you may see a barge passing thru the lock to the lower part of the river. Looking inside... More

This is quite a site - and its free. Drive down to the dam from the River Road - just under the Ford Bridge, and you can see across to the old Ford assembly plant (2nd oldest in the country - now closed) and an amazing dam on an amazing river.

Maybe it's because where I'm from we have Dams as well but I didn't find this to be anything spectacular. Would be a neat way to teach kids, but for a group of adults, there are a million better things to do in Minneapolis. The area itself is really nice and I enjoyed walking around the neighborhood much more than... More

Love going through the dam. Very interesting to see all that water and watch the fill and empty it. Have been through in a boat and it was exciting and a learning experince.
