Snowshoe fun

This is a long trek with many elevations which is perfect for the serious snowshoer. The is an expanse of open field that separates some of the park but overall a great workout.

(NOTE: A Minnesota state park's vehicle permit is required for this park. I have an annual permit, but day passes can be purchased at the park's main office.) Afton State Park is about 30-40 minutes east of the Twin Cities on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix River. On a particularly glorious autumn day, I packed up my two... More

The Fall colors were in full bloom. it was mostly yellows and some other muted colors. We were just there for the day to hike, but there are yurts and campsites that people use to vacation. The hiking trails are really nice taking you up and down with views of the river. A lot of other people had the same... More

While you do have to think ahead a bit about whether you want sunshine or shade to fit the temperature and your mood, there is plenty of both in this wonderful park. You'll also be doing some hills so good hiking footwear is recommended, especially off the asphalted pathways. We've seen spiked heels and plenty of flipflops, but neither is... More

Another state park with a lot to offer. There are hiking paths-easy and difficult as well as biking, cross county skiing in winter, beaches in summer. Camp sites are also available. Many options of views. St Croix River, hilly terrain as well as Prairie area. Good for groups, families, individuals.

I visited this state park on 12 September mainly for hiking as it is one of my favorite ways to relieve stress. Also, it is a much cheaper and healthy alternative activity a college student could do to pass the time and have a little bit of fun. I read reviews on this state park and decided to try it... More

On August 14 while on vacation in Minnesota, some friends recommended that we take a trip to this park and we were not disappointed. The area is located about an hour and a half drive from Woodbury Mn. This park is great for hiking. There are a few trails and we chose one that led to the riverside. At the... More

This is one of my most frequented state parks due to its convenient location. Even just the last couple miles of driving to this park is beautiful with its lush and rolling farmland. As far as the comment goes about the park being plopped down in a prairie, that is only one portion of the park. I don't find prairies... More

My husband and I went to Afton State Park for one day to experience its hiking trails. It was truly great. with over 20 miles of trails, lots of overviews and picnic tables, this park truly has it all for a nice outdoorsy day. Some of the hiking trails go a little uphill, make sure to bring comfortable shoes and... More

Great views and challenging hikes. I loved the variety of the river, the forest and the prairie. Lovely place for swimming picnicking and family gathers.
