History comes alive on the Lakefront line of the North Shore Scenic Railroad! During our summer season several trains a day depart the historic Duluth Union Depot for a trip through downtown Duluth, Canal Park, along the shore of Lake Superior and deep into the majestic north woods. Fully narrated tours tell the history of Duluth, the harbor, and the stories of the railroads that built northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

We bought our tickets on Groupon (2 for $18 for the Lester River ride Sun-Thur) and are sure glad we got a deal. The 3pm Lester River ride is good for the first ten minutes, but once you head out of downtown, you have to pull over and wait for another train to eventually pass... Once we got to the... More

Speakers located on ceiling, so you cannot hear if seated below. Some cars had no A/C. The echo of the screaming bored children was deafening. Nothing to see but neighborhoods in ill-repair. My expectations were low....and it couldn't even meet those. What a tourist trap. $$$ NOT worth it.

Very nice museum for adults and children! Very educational about the history in the area and has some pretty unique picture opportunities. We did the Lester River train ride and my suggestion is to pick the outside car or find one of the traincar's with the really good air conditioning. We sat in one that lost the air after the... Travel back in time and ride this train. It is very comfortable and at least one car has AC. They have refreshments that you can purchase on the ride. You can walk about and stand in the open door car and watch the north shore go by. If you have never been on a train this is a very good... More

When we purchased our tickets we were urged to arrive 20-30 min prior to boarding. When we arrived 20 min early there was nothing to be done other than wait in line in very warm temperatures. There was no instructions provided of where to go or what to do so we just followed the crowd. Once we started boarding no... More

The turn-around trip was great! We did the tour of Castle Danger brewery as well, which is only a year old, but their beers are already sold in the Duluth area. Well worth it if you're into that sort of thing. Only wish Castle Danger carried 1919 root beer as well! Train ride was interesting as the conductor is a... More

We arrived at the train station and had to stand in line outside before boarding the train. There was no indication of how to proceed and the people selling tickets were of very little help. It was clear that their only responsibility was to sell tickets. Once we started boarding no one told us that there was only one car... More

We had a great Friday night family adventure. 2 1/2 hr train ride with pizza. Purchased on groupon. Was worth the discounted price. Probably would not have done at full price. Would have been $84 for 2 adults 2 kids. We are very familiar with the North Shore but narration was still informative. My tip: sit in car behind concession... More

The train ride and the conductor, and helper were great. It was an extremely hot day in the 90's. No air conditioning. So it was a bit stifling. We were given information along the way. The ride was comfortable. Arriving at Two Harbors and then the ride back was better with air flow with the doors open.

The views were great of Lake Superior but I was under the impression that it was a guided tour. There was no guide telling of the history of the area or lake itself so that was disappointing. I enjoyed the train ride in the open air car but think they should have more than one open air car as most... More
