History comes alive on the Lakefront line of the North Shore Scenic Railroad! During our summer season several trains a day depart the historic Duluth Union Depot for a trip through downtown Duluth, Canal Park, along the shore of Lake Superior and deep into the majestic north woods. Fully narrated tours tell the history of Duluth, the harbor, and the stories of the railroads that built northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

We did the Friday night pizza train with our son and his grandparents. Our son says the train ride was the best part of our Duluth trip. We did sit on the second level, so we could see a little bit of a view. But, the pizza train was totally not worth it. The train ride starts at 6:30. You... More

Maybe the other excursion options are better, but our trip was not scenic. We went on the Lester River excursion, which was lots of fun, but only because riding the train had special meaning for one of our group and it was nice to experience that together. If not for that, the trip would have been a bust - riding... More

The "scenic" drive just takes you mostly through the neighborhoods of Duluth. You get a view of the lake for a bit, but it is mostly blocked by trees. It would be fun for kids, overall not really worth the cost for adults.

Waste of money and time. Pizza was Luke warm when finally handed out well over an hour - hour and a half after it was delivered to the train by a big box company not a local company. The narration was monotone, choppy and static. The music that finally started at 8:30 was far from uplifting. We made many unexpected/unexplained... More

Three-quarters of the trip was in the dark, without lights to see the route. Food consisted of cardboard-crust pizza (okay, the crust only tasted like cardboard - it wasn't actually made of cellulose) and a can of pop. Granted, there were additional snacks available for purchase, but unless you're interested in the differences in train coaches through the decades, I... More

We had a lovely evening on the Elegant Dinner Train. We were a bit surprised to board with the Music and Pizza crowd, but the "first class" dining car was well separated from the kids and chaos. All seating is assigned at tables for four, so we ate across from two visitors from New York. Amusing, but not quite as... More

Here's the thing--there are parts of this ride that are really very nice. The first part, as you ride directly along the lakeshore, are beautiful. And, looking over the Lester River is also beautiful. A lot of the in-between is not terribly scenic and it gets boring fast. We were in a car with a lot of families who had... More

We went on the elegant dinner ride, right after our wedding at canal park, it was an amazing experience, the service and staff were outstanding!! Food was good, I'm very picky, so i didn't care for some of the flavors, but overall a great experience.

I enjoyed learning more about the area and history of the trains. The stopover in Two Harbors was very nicely organized with the shuttles available to those who didn't want to walk. I would have preferred a little more information there and back about what we were passing.
