I consider the Minnesota Valley NWR, the hidden gem of the Twin Cities. Spanning the length of 13 cities in the South Metro, surprisingly few people know about it. It stretches from Jordon, MN north and eastward, past the Mall of America, and right up to the MSP Airport and Fort Snelling at the confluence of the two largest rivers... more

This place was a welcome reprieve from the busy atmosphere at the mall. A large airconditioned nature center with lots of big windows for viewing birds/wildlife. There were 3 wild turkeys and great variety (woodpeckers, chickadees, goldfinches, etc) of song birds at the birdfeeder area when we arrived. Further out we could see 3 turkey vultures perched on the overlook.... more
