This place is run by volunteers, and you can clearly see they enjoy every minute of it! Went on a rainy day during Cherry Fest to see the movie "Chef". Clean restrooms/FREE popcorn/NOT STICKY floor--if you have a chance to see a movie, definitely advise going here!

So-So would describe your average multiplex cinema experience. Not so at the State. From the volunteers who greet you at the door to the nice people at the popcorn stand, the State is the best venue within a 200+ mile radius. Enjoy!

Wow. That's all I can say. Seats were comfortable, food was great (if you know how they make popcorn taste that good tell me! I love movie popcorn and this is the bomb). Staff very friendly (and a lot are volunteers?!?!?!?). Go. Watch a movie. You will be happy.

This is a beautifully restored theater with comfortable seating and lots of legroom. The staff (volunteers) are all pleasant. Refreshments are reasonable and the day we were there it was free popcorn Tuesday.

The resurrection of this local state theatre was vital to the area. The story is as cool as what they've done on the inside. They're volunteer and donation run. They'll show everything from the blockbuster to an indie that is creating a buzz. Check it out. Decent movies at a decent price.

This theater was lovingly restored by this community. I live 3 hours away but I love to go to the State any time I can. I love this theater and I love what it stands for.

This is one of the best movie theaters in the country. Completely renovated, and located right downtown on Front St., this theater is staffed by volunteers and shows both first run films as well as kid's movies and old classics. It is also home to the Traverse City Film Festival. The seats are roomy and comfortable, the sound system is... More

Wide seats, plenty of legroom. Reasonable refreshment prices. Many outstanding free community events. Every city should be so lucky.

Saturday morning 25cent family movies are great. All volunteer staff keeps prices low. Sunday low sensory impact movies keep lights on low and sounds down for less sensory overload, these are often young children's movies. Great staff. clean beautiful interior. Old fashion theater. lots of fun!

I wish I had the time to actually watch a movie here, but unfortunately we were just passers-by. I really wanted to see Godzilla which was playing. The hostess was nice enough to let us poke our head into the theatre just to see what it was all about, and it has the old theatre charm for sure. If I... More
