this is an extraordinary place you need to visit when you go to Traverse City. It's out of town a couple of miles and it used to be a state hospital. now many of the buildings have been restored and turned into great restaurants, shops and businesses such as bakery, wine bar, pottery, hair salon/spa, technical businesses, etc etc. there... Just had coffee there, hiked there, and attended a concert there, helped a lady find her rented condo, and attended a Monday farmer's market. This is one of my go-to places for company. Having worked many years ago in two of the older buildings makes me appreciate those who are saving these beautiful structures.

This was an old mental hospital that have been redone into shops, condos and offices. There is also a bakery and wine tasting room. Was there for the TC Wine and Art Festival which was held on the grounds. Great time.

History buffs will love it, re-use of the Old State Hospital. If you are in to spooky movies, find the movie "Session 9" with the guy from CSI:Miami. It takes place in an old hospital and will give you a reference point for what you are going to walk through. It was a working hospital, and sprawling at that. The... More

I found it hard to navigate this area -- not sure where was the best place to park, found myself feeling lost walking around the basement looking at the shops. I feel like I might have missed out on some of the shopping area because I wasn't sure where I was going (tried looking at the directory/map and still confused).... More

We were there for the Dairy Festival. What fun for families and the weather was perfect. Enjoyed all the different vendors and the belly dancers. Ice cream ruled!!!

Amazing transformation of an old hospital.....housing an excellent restaurant, eclectic shops, artisan fare, a small winery, and a host of interesting shops. A bakery on site makes wonderful organic breads (my favorite is the olive parmesan), scones, and pastries. Well worth exploring and enjoying!

This eclectic mixture of shops, settings, restaurants, bakery, is situated in the basement of the Old State Hospital. It's still under fine-tuning, but most of the shops are interesting, although a bit pricey, but one-of-a-kind and worth the exploring!

Many of the shops here are expensive, but it is a nice little place to look around and the history of the building makes it unique.

This place was disturbing. The shops and restaurants in the main building are crammed into the basement. This area has low ceilings, tiny rooms (obviously where the mental patients were stored) and is just creepy. It's claustrophobic and unsettling. I don't understand why the shops are relegated to the basement instead of the first floor.
