Color tour trip.

So glad we visited the Soo Locks and the surrounding area. The viewing platforms are great. Brings you right up "close and personal" with the ships going through the locks.

My husband says I go to visit the sailors, but I actually like to see the boats who have traveled around the world. When my children were little we read paddle to the sea and since then I have been very interested to know how all the waterways tie up together to bring us boats from other countries.

The locks were still operating while I was in the Soo last week, however, as it was January, no tours were being given as the locks were soon to be closed for the winter. I did see a ship pass through them however, and what is really amazing is the view of the locks system from the air--or the international... More

The locks are nice to see from the observation "tower". The top floor allows a good view across the locks and river toward Canada. A river walk down the street has some nice historical markers at the river park below the locks. The city is pretty depressed.

If you have never visited the locks, it should be high on your list when you visit Michigan. Standing a few feet from a 1,000 foot freighter as it moves through the locks is an experience of a lifetime, that can be enjoyed by kids, adults and seniors. The visitor center is helpful with excellent displays on the locks and... More

This is a very pretty location adjacent to Whitefish Island. You can walk across the lock gate to a 20 minute nature walk along a wooden boardwalk or walk out onto Whitefish Island (another 20 minutes). Alternatively you can walk the length of the entire approach channel along the north side of the canal past a historic rotating railway bridge.... More

This is a great place to go every time I am in the area. It is so wild to see these 700-1100' ships pull into the lock then raise or lower the water to head out.

Our family came here during a visit to Sault St. Marie, Michigan. I have been coming here for 60 years, so know the Soo very well, have friends that live here.Construction was happening between the American and Canadian Locks, two ships came through within an hour. There are large, covered platforms to view VERY close to the chips. Since you... More

Had a wonderful experience taking the boat tour through the Soo Locks. It was very informative and an overall great time. It was very interesting being in the locks and experiencing this man-made marvel. It is very much worth it!

Have been to the locks numerous times. It's still free to visit, so you can't really complain if no ships come through while you're there! It's always a neat experience to see the lake freighters or an occasional foreign ocean going ship go through.
