We did this as part of a tour group. It was quite worth it, very informative. And we enjoyed the whole boat ride, not just the trip through the locks. The captain and first mate were very good speakers, gave us lots of good information. Those who wished to could sit under the deck and keep warm, but those who wanted... More

Super experience. Definately worth the money. Highly recommend timing your tour so you get to enter the lock with another tanker.

If you ever wondered how 1000 ft vessels get into and out of Lake Superior, just stop by the locks, watch, listen, learn. The staff will be glad to tell you when the next boat/freighter/ocean going vessel will be scheduled to enter the locks.

Recommend going to visitors center before viewing from the Viewing Deck, so that you have some knowledge and history when watching. It takes a long time for the freighters to go thru, and my husband and I were traveling with our teenage daughter and two of her friends, we thought that they may think it boring. However, my sister and... More

It is an interesting process to view, if you have seen, or do not understand, the locking process. Most of the lakes freighters lock though the Poe Lock which the second lock away from the viewing platform, so you are really not real close as these ships lock through. Only the smaller ships, pleasure craft, and the Soo Locks Tour... More

Finding a parking spot is the only problem, but definitely worth the challenge. Have been to other Locks in Seattle, but this is where the "big boys" play. Large ocean going ships lifted by water gravity in a short period of time. There is tiered viewing stands and free museum with an older movie that is too technical for the... More

My spouse and I made a whirlwind trip from one side of the UP all the way to Sault Ste Marie. I saved the best for may which was here! Watching the ships entering and leaving was a blast. There is a visitor type center on the beautiful park grounds that has a ton of information of the ships of... More

They keep a schedule in the museum, so find out when ships are scheduled to come through. Then get there early to see them prepare the lock and stay for an hour or so to watch the ship go through. Plan on looking through the museum for 1/2 hour or so. Parking is free after 6PM, otherwise have a few... More

The Soo Locks is a great visit, especially for younger children. Our boys are 12 & 7 and absolutely love coming to the locks. I've been coming here since I was a boy and so happy I introduced the locks to my boys. My 12 year old, bought a book on ships and researched every ship that came through the... More
