We watched a 1000' barge go through the locks. The barge entered, the water lowered, and the barge continued on it's way. There are shops, restaurants, gambling, etc. right there in town and you don't have to go to Canada.

Free entry into the store and elevated observation deck. Federal property so no firearms allowed. Prices in the store were very reasonable considering the tourist nature of the area. Did not do the locks boat ride, overcast and no ships going through the locks that day. Interesting historical displays in the store as well.

This is half the reason to travel to Sault Ste. Marie! The visitor center has a board to let you know when you know when ships are coming through the locks.

I've been watching the boats go through the locks since I was a kid. The place has changed since then, but it's still just as fascinating watching those big ships go up and down through the locks. The visitors center has several displays explaining the history of the locks and how they work. There is even a board showing the... More

Excellent experience, one that everyone visiting the area should enjoy. Neat to hear about how man has prevailed over nature in the Soo, and built the lock system to help America advance. Great volunteers, people working, and facilities. Totally cool!

The scenery is not exactly beautiful on this tour, but the Soo Locks was extremely interesting and was worth the trip! If you want to see any of the "sights" pointed out by the captain and you sit in the enclosed area downstairs, make sure you sit on the left as everything was on the left and they don't come... More

Not only is the engineering and watching the locks function fascinating, but so were the freighters going through. I saw a couple of freighters go through, it took about an hour from approach to exit.

We arrived in time to see a freighter going through and also a tour boat so we got the REAL feel of how the locks work.
