We took our two youngest grand-children (ages 6 & 8 y's/o) to Sault Ste Marie, MI to visit the world-famous "Soo Locks" (the vital link between the Atlantic Ocean and the entire midwest for shipping). Built by the US Army Corps of Engineers and maintained by them, the locks handle around 10,000 ships every year from spring until ice closes... More

We got luck to see a boat at the locks, it was really neat to stop and watch the process, the guys on the boat are friendly and love to chat it up with everyone watching.

We traveled up the Soo Locks on our recent trip to Michigan. When we arrived at the locks there was a note that said a boat was scheduled for about 2:15 to go through the locks. The note also stated that this was an estimated time. I figured we could go have lunch (we had about two hours) then head... More

We took a walk in downtown SSM and ended up on the viewing platform for the locks right as the sun was going down and a boat was entering the canal locks. Such a beautiful view. I highly recommend it!

I visited this attraction as a small child and was blown away. I couldnt wait to share it with my kids. We made the trip and it could not have been better. The weather began to cooperate and the rain stopped in time to park and cross the street to the locks. We had the luck of experiencing the passage... More

Many people have seen big ships from a distance, but to see them moving mere feet away from you is something else entirely. We were fortunate to cross paths with a few freighter enthusiasts on the viewing platform. They were happy to answer questions, as they are quite familiar with the ships. The visitors' center should be your first stop.... More

If you can time it when a freighter arrives - this was so amazing!! Delightful little downtown! We enjoyed a nice evening walk and it happened that there were two freighters traveling through the Locks. Super cool!

We never tire of watching the Big Boats passing through these awesome lanes where water raises or lowers them like an escalator. Lake Superior is 21 feet above the St. Mary’s River, yet these huge vessels are moved between the two with ease. Also amazing is that these locks are either the first (or the last) of the great St.... More

The Soo Locks are an engineering masterpiece that is a must see on any trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The locks are free to enter, have raised platform seating to watch the ships traveling through the locks, and the helpful guides at the visitor center make announcements over loudspeakers of what boats are coming through and relevant information about them.... Good museum-nice that they had times of ships going through the locks posted so you could plan your time there. Our kids are a little young to understand the process and got bored after awhile but the nice park area gave them room to run.
